The Falklands protect wildlife largely because of isolation. Few people, almost no development and a long history of sheep farming on large private holdings mean coastlines and wetlands remain intact. Several seabird and penguin species breed here in numbers rarely matched elsewhere, and the islands sit well outside any standard tourist circuit.

Travelers should know that this is a wildlife-led destination, not a hiking-trail one. Few marked routes exist, services are limited, and land access often depends on landowner permission. Remaining minefields from the 1982 conflict are fenced and signed, and they sit away from visitor sites, but they define where you walk. Costs are high because nearly everything is imported, and the currency is the Falkland Islands pound (FKP), pegged to sterling.
