- Intertidal pools and rocky shorelife — Explore rock pools at low tide to find crabs, limpets and kelp forests. It’s surprising how much life clings to the rocks when the surf isn’t swallowing everything.
- Tussac grasslands and wildflower meadows — Patches of thick tussac and low moorland burst with small flowers in season and host wrens, finches and other landbirds. The texture and color contrast with the bleak coastline.
- Marine mammals on the beaches — Keep an eye for lounging sea lions and the occasional elephant seal hauled out on remote shores. They add a whole other dimension to a walk along the beach.
