Backpacking in Nuuksio
🌟 Highlightnational park ranked #7
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated June 12, 2026

The first real decision in Nuuksio is whether you treat it as a quick Helsinki day trip or commit a night or two; that choice decides if you just skim the lakeside trails or actually feel the forest slow you down. Nuuksio sits just northwest of Helsinki, in Espoo and Kirkkonummi, and it’s basically the capital’s backyard wilderness. For backpackers, it’s easy: frequent public transport, no entrance fee, marked trails, fireplaces, and official lean-tos make low-budget overnights very doable. The trade-offs: it can feel busy near main trailheads, wildlife is shy (you’ll see more families than flying squirrels), and wild camping is restricted to designated spots. Compared with Repovesi or Sipoonkorpi, Nuuksio is less remote and dramatic, but far more accessible, which is exactly why I use it as my “jet-lag forest” after landing in Finland.

💡 HighlightsDon't-miss highlights and experiences

  • Haltia Nature Centre — The park’s gateway: good maps, exhibits that explain the landscape, a practical café and gear shop. Perfect when the weather turns sour or if you want a quick lesson on what to look for out on the trails.
  • Haukkalampi Lake and campsite — A compact, pretty lake with lean-tos and campfire spots right on the shore. Easy to reach, great for a swim, an evening fire and that simple wilderness vibe without trekking for days.
  • Pitkäjärvi (Long Lake) and rocky beaches — Clear water, granite outcrops and little beaches for sunbathing or cliff-jumping. The shoreline scenery feels quintessentially Finnish: sparse pines, smooth rocks, and open reflections.
  • Old-growth pine forests and rocky ridges — The backbone of Nuuksio’s look: twisted pines, thick lichen, and exposed bedrock.

  • Old-growth pine forests and rocky ridges — The backbone of Nuuksio’s look: twisted pines, thick lichen, and exposed bedrock. These sections are quiet, full of texture, and excellent for berry- and mushroom-foraging in season.
  • Bogs and mires — Wide, open peatlands with boardwalks and a totally different palette of plants and birds. They give big, moody skies and are especially beautiful at dawn or under low autumn light.
  • Wildlife watching spots — Flying squirrels, elk tracks, beaver lodges and a long roster of woodland birds. Sightings aren’t guaranteed, but go quiet at dawn or dusk and your chances jump way up.
  • Marked hiking trails and overnight shelters — A neat network from short loops to longer routes, all well signposted with maintained lean-tos and fire pits. Great for day hikes if you’re short on time, or for a cheap overnight under the pines.

Nuuksio is a breath of fresh air, with its serene lakes and lush forests that feel like a world away from Helsinki. You can lose yourself in nature without the crowds. But here’s the catch: the trails can get muddy, especially after rain. Bring sturdy footwear and be prepared for some slippery spots.
