- Basalt plateaus and volcanic geology — The park is shaped by lava flows, basalt slabs and strange rocky outcrops, which give the landscape a lunar, sculpted look that’s great for wandering and photography. You’ll find unexpected cliffs, columnar jointing and lonely ridgelines to explore.
- Scattered hillforts and stone ruins — Low, ancient fortifications and ruined settlements dot the plateau; they’re small, atmospheric, and make for good short side trips that mix culture with the landscape. No crowds, just stone walls and big skies.
- Alpine meadows and pastoral life — In summer the high pastures explode with flowers and nomadic shepherds bring flocks up to graze — a great place for easy day walks, wildflower spotting, and seeing traditional life. If you like low-impact rural travel, bring cash for fresh cheese or a ride on a local jeep.
