Backpacking in Vashlovani
🌟 Highlightnational park ranked #6
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 15, 2026

Most people arrive in Georgia thinking Vashlovani is just “the dry, empty one” you skip for the big mountains. That’s wrong; the emptiness is the whole point. Vashlovani sits in the far southeast, near the Azerbaijani border, a long way from Tbilisi’s usual tourist loop. It’s a semi-desert badlands park with clay canyons, scruffy steppe, and real chances (not guarantees) of seeing gazelles, vultures, maybe even a distant bear or wolf. Hiking is more about long, exposed tracks than dramatic summits, and you’ll feel every kilometer if you underestimate the heat or distance. Access is awkward, permits and 4x4 logistics add friction, and public transport is basically theory. Compared with Kazbegi or Borjomi, it’s harsher, emptier, cheaper, and far less curated—better for patient backpackers who like effort more than Instagram.

💡 HighlightsDon't-miss highlights and experiences

  • Badlands and red sandstone canyons — The signature look of Vashlovani: wind-sculpted gullies, ochre cliffs and surreal, almost lunar shapes. Great for short hikes and photography; light at golden hour turns the whole place electric. (My personal favorite — can’t get enough of those colors.)
  • Iori River gorge and tugai (gallery) forest — A narrow, green ribbon through the semi-desert: dense riparian trees, shade, and a concentration of birds and small mammals you wouldn’t expect in a desert park. Easy walks here feel totally different from the open plateaus.
  • Open steppe plateaus and juniper stands — Wide, wind-exposed grasslands with scattered shrubs and old junipers. In spring there are surprising wildflowers; it’s also where you’ll spot steppe-adapted reptiles and get that big-sky, horizon-bending

  • Birdwatching and raptors — Vashlovani is a hotspot for steppe and riparian birds: kestrels, buzzards and other birds of prey cruise the thermals, while migrants funnel through the river corridor. Bring binoculars — you’ll likely see more than you expect.
  • Small-canyon and cliff viewpoints — Short, punchy trails lead to cliff edges and overlooks that reveal the park’s layered terrain. These are perfect for a half-day outing when you want dramatic vistas without committing to a long trek.
  • Wildlife encounters — foxes, boar and reptiles — It’s not teeming with large mammals, but the park’s mix of habitats supports foxes, wild boar, hares and a rich reptile community. Dawn and dusk are the best times to spot movement.
  • Night skies and solitude — Far from big towns, Vashlovani offers excellent stargazing and real silence. Campsites near the plateaus or river feel wonderfully remote — bring warm layers for the cool desert nights.
