Backpacking in Reeperbahn
🌟 Highlightfestival ranked #10
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 15, 2026

Reeperbahn Festival is not for anyone chasing a polished, VIP, influencer-weekend fantasy or a single-genre comfort zone. It’s chaos in a good way. Backpackers still win here because that chaos is exactly where you stumble into your new favorite band in a basement club at 1 a.m. and spend almost nothing compared with the big-name mega-festivals. The festival takes over Hamburg’s St. Pauli district in northern Germany, along the infamous Reeperbahn strip. Expect four days of mostly indie, rock, electronic, and experimental acts, plus industry talks and art shows, with crowds of music nerds, creatives, and locals bar-hopping between tiny venues and mid-size halls. I go for the density: dozens of shows within walking distance, cheap street food, and the feeling you’re scouting tomorrow’s headliners before everyone else.

  • Pop-ups, secret shows and club takeovers — Expect one-off collaborations, surprise guest appearances and tightly curated label or country showcases. These ephemeral events are often the most memorable: intimate, improvisational and impossible to fully plan for.
