Backpacking in Andros Route
👌 Worth visitinghike ranked #8
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated July 30, 2026

Your boots scrape old stone, wet from a morning spring, and a donkey bell clanks somewhere above the terrace walls while the Aegean flashes blue between olive branches. This is the Andros Route, a waymarked long-distance trail webbing across Andros Island in the Cyclades, a quick ferry hop from Athens. It’s gorgeous and honest: cobbled mule paths, green ravines, whitewashed villages, wind-battered ridges. It’s also longer and tougher than it looks on a brochure—around 100 km if you commit to the full line, with plenty of steep, knee-testing climbs. Public buses and taxis make reaching trailheads doable but occasionally awkward, unlike the more polished logistics of, say, Naxos day hikes. Still, Andros feels wilder, cooler, and far less choreographed than the classic Cycladic island walks.

💡 HighlightsThe experiences that define the visit

  1. Chora (Andros Town) — A compact maze of neoclassical houses, narrow alleys and harborside cafés; hiking here feels cultural rather than wildernessy. Stop for a coffee, poke into the small Archaeological and Contemporary Art museums, and enjoy the contrast between polished town life and the rough trails you’ve been walking.
  2. Menites Springs & Watermills — Lush, shaded valley with cool spring water, old stone watermills and mossy bridges. It’s a real microclimate on an otherwise dry island, perfect for a slow lunch break and a quick dip if you’re hot. (Personal favorite — the sound of falling water here never gets old.)

  4. Grias to Pidima (The Old Woman’s Jump) Cliff viewpoint — A dramatic bluff with sweeping Aegean panoramas that really sell the island’s scale. The exposure and vertical rock make for epic sunrise/sunset photos — and a quieter viewpoint than the busy beaches.
  5. Paleopolis ruins and nearby secluded bays — Ancient foundations and scattered stones meet clear, shallow bays. It’s an unusual combo: walk through archaeological remains, then drop your pack and swim in remarkably blue water with almost no crowds.

Pro-tip: Hit the Andros Route in late May or early October—when the trail feels like it’s yours alone, the air is crisp but kind, and the island’s pulse is slow enough to savor every step.
