A silver steel lattice wraps a black granite base, and the contrast is the first thing you read from the harbor road. Memorial ACTe sits on the Pointe-à-Pitre waterfront in Guadeloupe, on the grounds of the old Darboussier sugar factory. Inside is one of the Caribbean’s serious museums on the slave trade and slavery, built as a place to think rather than to tick off. Give it two to three hours, because the permanent exhibition is worth every minute and the café is not worth planning around. Arrive soon after opening on a weekday, when school groups have not yet arrived and the cool galleries are quiet. Come back toward late afternoon for the Morne Mémoire garden, when the heat eases. Skip the gift shop unless you want books. Gosier, about 15 minutes by road to the east, is the social option. Sainte-Anne and Saint-François are further out, quieter and beachier, better if you have a rental car and want sand over city time. For a first visit, Gosier gives the easiest mix of nightlife, safety and access to the museum.
