- Dettifoss — Europe’s most powerful waterfall, raw and thunderous; the sheer volume and spray make it feel like standing next to nature’s largest drum kit.
- Selfoss — A wide, horseshoe-shaped cascade just upstream from Dettifoss; calmer to walk around and photo-friendly, with lots of viewpoints along easy paths.
- Hafragilsfoss — Drops into a deep, narrow gorge with steep basalt walls; more intimate and dramatic in a different way than Dettifoss, great for feeling how the river carved the landscape.
- Ásbyrgi — A huge horseshoe-shaped canyon with a peaceful pond, birch woods and several short hikes up to the rim for wild views; surprisingly green and sheltered compared to the rest of the park (personal favorite).

- Vesturdalur valley and viewpoints — Short trails lead to dramatic cliff faces, columnar basalt and sweeping canyon views; excellent for a quick, rewarding walk without committing to a long trek.
- The canyon and its geology + wildlife — The whole Jökulsárgljúfur area is a textbook of jökulhlaup-carved landscapes: braided river channels, steep cliffs and potholes. Add in cliff-nesting birds and the occasional Arctic fox, and you’ve got both geology and wildlife on display.
