Backpacking in Stykkishólmur
🌟 Highlightvillage ranked #4
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 16, 2026

Most people only realize on the bus out that Stykkishólmur is the easiest place on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula to feel “remote Iceland” without losing basic logistics: buses, ferries, supermarkets, and real beds all in one compact harbor village. It sits on the north side of Snæfellsnes, facing Breiðafjörður’s maze of tiny islands, roughly halfway between Reykjavík and the Westfjords gateway. For backpackers, it’s a practical pause point more than a “bucket list” headliner: calm, walkable, with sea air that smells like salt and drying fish, and low, colorful houses under a big, empty sky. People stop here to break up the ring-road rush, catch the ferry to the Westfjords, or wander the harbor cliffs at sunset; others just pass through because it looks sleepy from the timetable. Evenings are quiet, almost small-town theatrical: a few travelers cooking in hostels, locals walking dogs, the harbor lights flickering on. It’s easier to meet people in the guesthouse kitchen than in town itself. Compared with nearby Grundarfjörður or Ólafsvík, Stykkishólmur feels slightly more polished and visitor-ready, but still more like a working coastal community than a pure tourist stop.

If you appreciate a place that feels both alive and tranquil, Stykkishólmur is worth your time.

💡 HighlightsPlaces and moments you shouldn't skip

  • Library of Water (Bókasafn Vatnsins) — A quiet, haunting installation of glass columns filled with water samples from Icelandic glaciers and a simple reading room; feels like a small, reflective art/hydrology chapel that connects local landscape and culture.
  • Norska Húsið (The Norwegian House) — Old trading house on the harbour that now hosts maritime and local-history exhibits; gives real context to Stykkishólmur’s fishing and trading past and is great for rainy-day browsing.
  • Old Harbour & Colorful Trading Houses — The working harbour is the town’s living room: boats, fish-processing sheds, and the neat rows of painted wooden houses make for excellent photos and an easy, atmospheric walk.

  • Súgandisey and its Lighthouse — A short walk/sea-accessible islet with a lighthouse and coastal cliffs; puffins and other seabirds nest nearby in season and the viewpoints give a broad panorama of Breiðafjörður.
  • Stykkishólmskirkja (the church) — Small, picturesque church on a knoll above town; simple interior, local memorials, and a quiet hill that’s a decent low-effort viewpoint over the fjord.
  • Baldur ferry & Breiðafjörður island tours — Ferries and day tours leave from the harbour to the archipelago; excellent hands-on experience for birdwatching, island hopping and seeing traditional coastal life up close.
  • Narfeyrarstofa (historic café/restaurant) — A local institution housed in an old merchant’s building; classic Icelandic dishes, cosy wood interiors and a strong sense of place — more cultural than a generic stop for lunch.
  • Small galleries, craft shops and wool outlets — Stykkishólmur punches above its weight for local art and knitwear; pop into galleries along the harbour to meet makers, buy local wool products, and see contemporary takes on Icelandic tradition.
  • Harbour promenade & short coastal walks — Easy trails and boardwalks around the town’s edge give immediate access to tide pools, sea-spray viewpoints and quiet spots to watch the light change over the islands.
  • Town museum / local-history exhibits — A modest municipal collection with fishing gear, photos and oral-history pieces that explain everyday life here over the last century; small but grounding if you want the human story behind the scenery.
A few great day trips just outside Stykkishólmur: Snæfellsjökull National Park (Djúpalónssandur and lava fields), the dramatic Kirkjufell mountain and waterfall at Grundarfjörður, and the tiny black-church at Búðir — Kirkjufell is my personal favorite.

Stykkishólmur’s charm is in its quiet harbor, the salty tang of the sea mixing with the crisp Icelandic air. The best spots are small guesthouses and hostels that put you right in the thick of local life, where you can hear the gulls overhead and the occasional creak of fishing boats at dawn.

Start with the Egils Guesthouse. It’s a no-frills, clean, and cozy place where you can meet fellow travelers without the touristy buzz. The dorms are simple but well-kept, and the kitchen setup lets you cook your own meals—crucial when you want to stretch your budget and savor local ingredients from the nearby market. Staying here means waking up to soft morning light spilling through wooden shutters, the scent of fresh bread from a nearby bakery drifting in.

If you want a bit more privacy but still crave that local vibe, Hótel Egilsen offers rooms with character—think exposed beams and a view of the harbor’s shifting light. It’s a step up in comfort but still within reach for backpackers who want to treat themselves without losing the village’s intimacy.

Avoid the big chain hotels on the outskirts. They isolate you from the village’s pulse and make you miss the subtle rhythms of Stykkishólmur’s everyday life—the fishermen unloading their catch, the quiet chatter in the cafés, the way the light changes on the water as the day fades. Staying central, in a place where you can walk everywhere, means you’re not just visiting Stykkishólmur—you’re living it.

🚌 Day tripsShort trips worth adding

Snæfellsnes Peninsula
A trip to the Snæfellsnes Peninsula is like stepping into a postcard. The drive takes about 1.5 hours, and you’ll be rewarded with dramatic cliffs, black sand beaches, and the iconic Snæfellsjökull glacier. Budget around 3,000 ISK for gas and snacks. Late spring to early fall is ideal, as the weather is milder and the days are longer. Many first-timers underestimate the time needed to explore; don’t rush. Take a moment at Kirkjufell Mountain to soak in the view—it’s worth every second.

Breiðafjörður Bay
Hop on a ferry to explore Breiðafjörður Bay, where you can island-hop and even spot seals. The ferry ride is about 30 minutes, and you’ll want to budget around 5,000 ISK for the trip. Summer is prime time for this adventure, with calm waters and abundant wildlife. A common mistake is not checking the ferry schedule in advance; plan ahead to avoid missing out on the islands’ unique charm.

Vatnshellir Cave
For a taste of Iceland’s underground wonders, head to Vatnshellir Cave, just a 40-minute drive away. The guided tour costs about 6,000 ISK and lasts around 1.5 hours. Late spring or early fall offers the best experience, as the cave is less crowded. Many backpackers skip this, thinking caves are all the same, but the vibrant colors and unique formations here tell a story of volcanic activity. Don’t forget a warm jacket; it’s chilly inside!

Stykkishólmur’s Lighthouse
You don’t have to go far to find beauty. A short walk from the village leads you to the lighthouse, where the views of the surrounding islands are breathtaking. This is a quick trip—just 20 minutes on foot. It’s free, making it perfect for budget travelers. Early morning or late evening is best for stunning light and fewer crowds. Many overlook this local treasure, but it’s a perfect way to start or end your day.
