- Asiatic lions — The real reason you’re here: Gir is the only place in the world with a free-ranging population of Asiatic lions. Seeing a pride laze on a road or trot across the grass gives you a window into raw predator behaviour you won’t find elsewhere.
- Devaliya (Interpretation Zone) — A fenced-off pocket inside Gir near Sasan that reliably delivers close lion sightings and good photo ops. Short walking trails and clear viewing make it perfect if you want high odds without having to spend the whole day on safari (my personal favorite).

- Kamleshwar Dam and wetlands — A small wetland patch that punches above its weight for birding. Good for waterbirds, raptors and dramatic sunsets; great when you want a quieter change of pace from the main forest roads.
- Smaller mammals & predators — Gir isn’t a one-species park: keep an eye out for sambar, chital, nilgai, jungle cat, and striped hyena. These sightings, plus the chance of a leopard in the dense patches, show off the park’s real biodiversity.
- Scrub forest and open grassland landscapes — The mix of dry deciduous forest, acacia scrub and open plains is striking at dawn and dusk. It’s great for wide-angle photos, and you’ll notice how the light transforms the place through the day.
- Interpretation centre & short nature trails — Small visitor centres and guided nature walks give context: local ecology, lion behaviour, and conservation history. Useful before a safari so you know what to look (and listen) for.
