- Mount Penanjakan (Sunrise viewpoint) — the classic postcard shot: the sun rising over a sea of clouds with Mount Bromo and Semeru poking through. You don’t need to be an expert hiker to get the view (short jeep ride or a pre-dawn stroll), which is why it’s my personal favorite — dramatic, cheap, and unforgettable.
- Mount Bromo Crater — the smoking, perfectly round crater you can actually walk right up to. Climb the stone steps to the rim, feel the sulfur breeze, and peer into a volcanic mouth — surreal lunar vibes and great up-close geology.
- Tengger Caldera / Sea of Sand (Pasir Berbisik) — a flat, black volcanic plain that spreads around Bromo. Walk it, rent a horse, or watch the wind “whisper” through the sand; it amplifies how raw and vast this landscape is compared with the rest of Java.

- Pura Luhur Poten & Tenggerese villages — a working Hindu temple inside the caldera and the nearby Tenggerese communities that keep old customs alive. Visiting gives the place cultural depth: festivals, offerings, and a reminder this isn’t just scenery — people live here.
- Mount Semeru (and Ranu Kumbolo) — Java’s highest peak and a serious multi-day trek. The reward isn’t just the summit: Ranu Kumbolo, an alpine lake on the route, is one of the most peaceful campsites you’ll find in Indonesia. Tough, but iconic.
- Bukit Teletubbies (Savanna hills) — rolling, emerald-green hills that look like someone painted them. Easy, breezy walks and lovely at sunrise or sunset; a nice contrast to the ash-and-rock parts of the park.
- Highland flora and birdlife (Javan edelweiss, etc.) — the park’s alpine zones host unique plants like the Javan edelweiss and a variety of upland birds. They’re delicate and beautiful; stick to trails and don’t pick the flowers.
