Backpacking in Qeshm Island’s Valley of Stars
👍 Recommendedhike ranked #6
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated May 22, 2026

Most people online sell Qeshm Island’s Valley of Stars as a quick roadside photo stop, but you can actually turn it into a real half‑day wander through slot-like gullies and crumbly ridges that feel closer to a Martian obstacle course than a viewpoint. The valley sits on Qeshm Island in the Persian Gulf, off Iran’s southern coast near the town of Berkeh-ye Khalaf. The hike itself is short and mostly easy, more of a choose-your-own-loop through eroded canyons than a marked trail, with powdery dust underfoot and wind-carved towers closing in above you. It’s simple to reach by shared taxi from Qeshm City, which makes it busier and less wild than the island’s mangrove or Chahkooh canyon routes, but the trade-off is big, otherworldly scenery for minimal effort and maximum sun exposure.

  • Night sky and stargazing — Low light pollution on the island means a vivid Milky Way and bright constellations on clear nights. Standing among the weird rock silhouettes with that sky overhead is a different kind of highlight than daytime scenery.
  • Local lore, silence and small desert life — The valley comes with stories — locals talk about meteors and spirits — which gives the place an eerie, memorable atmosphere after dark. Plus you’ll spot scuttling lizards, occasional seabirds overhead and the constant whisper of wind, all tiny details that make the hike feel singular.
