Backpacking in Gali Ali Beg
👌 Worth visitinghike ranked #4
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated June 11, 2026

Most people picture Gali Ali Beg as a roadside photo stop under a big waterfall and nothing more; that’s wrong. It’s a full-body canyon walk in Iraqi Kurdistan, in the mountains between Erbil and Soran, where the road squeezes into a steep, river-cut gorge. The hike itself is short to moderate in length but slow and tiring: you scramble over slick boulders, wade through cold water, and dodge picnic trash and blaring music in peak season, then suddenly the canyon walls close in and you’re walking through echoing rock with spray on your face. Public transport gets you close via shared taxis and minibuses, but the last stretch usually needs a hired car. It’s easier and more touristy than Rawanduz or Halgurd routes, less wild, but more instantly dramatic and accessible for a first hit of Kurdish mountain energy.

💡 HighlightsThe experiences that define the visit

  • Cathedral-like canyon walls — Towering, sheer rock faces funnel the trail into a dramatic gorge; the scale and vertical cliffs feel cinematic and make the hike more about exploring a slot of stone than a typical ridge walk.
  • Seasonal waterfall and emerald pools — After rain or in spring a waterfall fills the riverbed and creates cool, green pools you can paddle or sit beside; that sudden splash of water and shade is a refreshing contrast to the dry hills around.
  • High viewpoints with sweeping valley vistas — Short scrambles up the rim open to wide views over the surrounding valleys and terraced fields; dawn or late afternoon light turns the canyon into sharp, photogenic layers.
  • Birds, butterflies and mountain life — Raptors often ride the thermals off the cliffs, butterflies and wildflowers

  • Local shepherd culture and simple tea stops — Small Kurdish shepherd camps and roadside tea vendors pop up near trail access; stopping for salty cheese, bread, or a cup of sweet tea is cheap, friendly, and gives real local flavor to the hike.

  • Seasonal Activities: Spring brings wildflowers and fresh water flows, adding sensory rewards to the trek. Autumn’s crisp air sharpens the landscape’s colors, enhancing every vista.

  • Price Fluctuations: Off-peak seasons (winter and summer) might offer cheaper local accommodations, but the extreme weather makes these less practical for hiking.

Pro-tip: Aim for early autumn to catch cooler temps, fewer people, and the trail’s colors at their peak—your legs will thank you, and so will your camera.

We 💚 feedbackFinal thoughts on hiking the Gali Ali Beg

Gali Ali Beg is a wild ride. The trails are rugged, and the air is thick with adventure. You’ll sweat and strain, but when you reach that overlook, the view of the winding river below makes every step worth it. The locals are warm, but don’t expect English everywhere—brush up on a few Kurdish phrases. And hey, pack snacks; the hikes can be longer than you think. Trust me, that first cold drink at the end feels like pure victory.
