Your boots crunch over dry oak leaves, the air smells like woodsmoke and wild thyme, and somewhere down the slope you hear kids shouting in Kurdish over a crackling picnic fire. This is Zawita Forest, in the hills just north of Duhok in Iraqi Kurdistan, and it’s one of the easier wild-ish escapes for backpackers in the region. The hiking is pleasant rather than epic, with rolling forested hills, seasonal streams, and birds and foxes if you’re quiet, but don’t expect dense wildlife or strict national-park-style protection.
