Backpacking in Amalfi Coast
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated September 4, 2026

Most people realize too late that the Amalfi Coast rewards early risers: hit the trails before 8 a.m. and you own the stairs, the buses, and the views while everyone else is still queuing for cappuccino. Strung along the southern edge of Italy’s Sorrentine Peninsula in Campania, it’s a cliff-hugging playground where hiking is as good as the seafood. The classic coastal routes are short-to-moderate in length, steep, and punishing on knees, but the payoff is outrageous sea views, lemon terraces, and stone villages stacked like Lego. Public transport drops you close to many trailheads, but buses are crowded and chaotic. Compared with big Alpine routes, these hikes are shorter, hotter, and far more social—less wilderness, more drama.

You’re not just walking; you’re traversing a canvas of cliffs, crashing waves, and colorful villages that cling to the mountainsides. Each step reveals a new vista that makes you forget the burn in your legs.

Getting there is a breeze. Public transport is reliable, with buses and ferries zipping you between towns. You can easily hop on a bus from Salerno or Naples and dive right into the adventure. Plus, the low cost of travel here means you can splurge on that gelato or a fresh seafood meal without breaking the bank.

💡 HighlightsPlaces and moments you shouldn't skip

  • Sentiero degli Dei (Path of the Gods) — classic high-ledge trail with insane cliffside panoramas of Positano, Amalfi and the Li Galli islands; the narrow single-track, wild thyme smells and constant sea views make it feel cinematic. (personal favorite)
  • Valle delle Ferriere — a cool, green pocket behind Amalfi with waterfalls, fern-covered gorges and old mills; the hike plunges you into a rainforest-like microclimate, a nice contrast to the sun-baked coastal ridges.
  • Sentiero dei Limoni (Lemon Path) — terraced citrus groves, stone steps and close-up village life between Maiori and Minori or Tramonti; fragrant lemon trees, low traffic and roadside limoncello stops give it a uniquely local flavor.

  • Punta Campanella — the rocky tip of the peninsula with sweeping views to Capri and Ischia; a wilder, less-crowded coastal route where you’ll get seabird sightings, scrubby wildflowers and raw sea-air exposure few other Amalfi trails offer.

  • Seasonal Activities: Spring bursts with wildflowers and local festivals, while fall brings grape harvests and food fairs—both add cultural layers to your hike.

  • Price Fluctuations: Summer’s peak demand inflates accommodation and transport costs sharply. Booking in shoulder seasons saves cash and spares you the tourist surcharge.

Pro-tip: Aim for late May or early October—cooler trails, fewer crowds, and a chance to savor the coast’s raw charm without the tourist circus.

The Amalfi Coast trails are a feast for the senses, but they come with their own set of realities. Weather can shift quickly; sunny mornings can morph into sudden downpours. Always check forecasts and pack a lightweight rain jacket.

The terrain is steep and rocky, with sections that demand your full attention. Footing can be tricky, especially after rain, so sturdy hiking boots are non-negotiable. Navigation is straightforward, but a map or a reliable app is your best friend—don’t rely solely on signs.

Wildlife encounters are rare, but if you spot a snake or a wild boar, keep your distance. They’re more scared of you than you are of them.
