Backpacking in Dolphin Cove
👀 For curious travelersattraction ranked #8
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 22, 2026

Dolphin Cove sits right beside Dunn’s River Falls on the same stretch of road, but it is a separate property with its own ticket, so one entry does not cover both. It lies on the coast just west of Ocho Rios, in the north of Jamaica. The dolphin swims are the draw, and they are polished, well run and pricey. Skip the add-ons you can’t picture yourself doing, because the base encounters are the point. Cruise groups can make midday crowded. I paid US$5 for a cold coconut water at the snack stand and drank it while watching handlers feed the dolphins, which beat any souvenir I saw. The Ocho Rios site is larger and busier than its sister site near Montego Bay.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #8 attraction in Jamaica
The unique appeal for travelers

Dolphin Cove gives you close, supervised contact with animals you would otherwise only see on a screen, and that is the whole case for going. The dolphin swim is the headline, with a belly-ride push across the lagoon that even nervous swimmers manage, since staff stay in the water with you. The nurse shark and stingray encounters suit travelers who want something more unusual than a standard beach day. On a route, it works as an easy half-day anchor when you are already in Ocho Rios for Dunn’s River Falls, next door. The cost is the real hurdle for a budget backpacker, so pick one experience rather than buying a bundle, and go early before tour buses arrive. If animal captivity bothers you, this is not your stop.

💡 HighlightsTop highlights of Dolphin Cove

  1. Dolphin Encounter and Swim: The signature experience. You meet bottlenose dolphins in a sheltered seawater lagoon, with a handler guiding touches, a foot push and a fin tow.
  2. Shark Experience: Nurse sharks glide through shallow water while you stand or snorkel close by. They are docile and the staff keep everyone calm, which makes it surprisingly relaxed.
  3. Stingray Encounter: You stand waist-deep and the rays glide against your legs. Their skin feels like wet velvet, and the guides show you how to touch them safely.
  4. Jungle Trail: A shaded walk past parrots, snakes and iguanas. It is a good place for photos at your own pace, without needing a separate time slot.
  5. Dolphin Cove’s Snorkel Area: A shallow roped-off space where you can float over fish near the lagoon. It suits anyone who wants water time

For a first visit, the dolphin encounter is the one to book, since it is the reason the place exists and nothing else here matches it.

🌤️ When to go?When to go for the best experience

  • Dry Season (mid-December to April): Days run 27 to 30°C (81 to 86°F) with little rain and steady sun, so lines for the dolphin and stingray sessions are longest when cruise ships dock at nearby Ocho Rios. Hotel rates peak.
  • Shoulder Months (May to June): Highs of 30 to 32°C (86 to 90°F), short afternoon showers and thinner crowds. Daylight lasts about 12.5 hours.
  • Hot and Wet (July to October): Humid at 31 to 33°C (88 to 91°F), with heavy downpours and hurricane risk from August to October. Prices drop and some sessions can be canceled in rough weather.
  • November: Rain eases, temperatures sit near 28 to 30°C (82 to 86°F), and crowds remain modest.
Book the first morning slot on a weekday, ideally on a day with no cruise ship in port at Ocho Rios.

🛏️ Where to stay? How to pick the right area

Ocho Rios is the practical base for Dolphin Cove, since the park sits on the main road just west of the town center. Backpackers get the most choice here: small guesthouses and hostel-style places cluster near the town center and the White River side, with easy access to shared taxis, supermarkets and cheap jerk stands. It is social and safe by day, though you should take a licensed taxi after dark rather than walking the dim stretches of the main road.

It is social and safe by day, though you should take a licensed taxi after dark rather than walking the dim stretches of the main road.

For a quieter option, look at the Mammee Bay and Priory area just west, which suits travelers who want a beach and a calmer evening. Prices are lower than in the resort strip, and route taxis pass regularly. Runaway Bay, further west, offers laid-back guesthouses and a relaxed local feel, but nightlife is thin and you will depend on rides. Most solo travelers prefer Ocho Rios itself for meeting other backpackers, joining group trips to Dunn’s River Falls and Blue Hole, and catching onward buses.

FAQTraveler FAQ

Plan on 2 to 3 hours at Dolphin Cove, which covers one animal encounter plus the nature trail. Dolphin sessions last around 30 minutes, and check-in starts about 30 to 45 minutes earlier. Add another hour if you want the shark, parrot and snake areas without rushing.
Dolphin Cove is worth the fee if an animal encounter is a priority, since entry alone is modest at about US$30 to 60. Dolphin swims cost US$80 to 120, which is a real splurge on a backpacker budget. The stingray and trail areas suit tighter budgets, while swimming with wild animals is better saved for elsewhere.
Dolphin Cove lies a few kilometers west of central Ocho Rios on the north coast, about 10 to 15 minutes by taxi. Route taxis on the main road cost roughly US$2 to 4, and a private taxi runs around US$10 to 15. From Kingston, buses and shuttles take about 2 to 2.5 hours to Ocho Rios; from Montego Bay roughly 2 hours.
⚠️ Things can change over time, so always validate details locally before you go.

We 💚 feedbackFinal thoughts on visiting Dolphin Cove

Dolphin Cove pairs well with Dunn’s River Falls next door, so spend a morning here and the afternoon climbing the falls. I would book only one animal encounter, go on a day when fewer cruise ships dock, and then head west or east along the coast for beaches and cheaper eating.
