Backpacking in Reach Falls
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 22, 2026

The first plunge pool I stepped into had a current pulling my ankles sideways, and the water was a milky turquoise I had expected to be brown after rain. That surprised me more than the drop itself. Reach Falls sits in the northeastern parish of Portland, in the hills above Manchioneal, in Jamaica. It is not a single big waterfall. It is a staircase of limestone ledges, pools and chutes you climb through, and that is the appeal. Skip anything you hear about a grand drop. Come for the swimming and the cave jump. Crowds thin out on weekdays, and the entry fee is modest for what you get, though guides add a tip on top. The road in is long and winding, so allow plenty of time. Bring water shoes, since the rock is slick.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #99 unique site in Jamaica
The unique appeal for travelers

Reach Falls earns the trip because it behaves differently from the roped-off waterfalls most travelers see in Jamaica. The water here runs turquoise over limestone terraces in the hills above Manchioneal in eastern Portland, and you can wade, float and climb through it rather than photograph it from a fence. The effort is real. This is the far eastern end of the island, well off the north coast resort belt, and the last stretch of road is narrow, winding and slow. That distance is also why the place stays far calmer than Dunn’s River Falls, where cruise groups arrive in waves. Here you often share the pools with a handful of people and a guide.

Cost is modest, and a local guide is worth hiring. Guides know the underwater cave passage behind the main cascade, where you swim through a dark gap and surface in a hollow with the water pounding beside you, and they know which ledges are safe to jump from. Reach Falls fits neatly into an eastern loop with Port Antonio’s beaches and the Blue Mountain foothills, so pair it with a night on the coast and give it a full morning.

💡 HighlightsPlaces and moments you shouldn't skip

  1. The Main Cascades: a series of stepped limestone ledges where the Driver’s River tumbles into a chain of clear pools. Wading and swimming up through them is the core experience.
  2. A Deep Pool: a deep, quiet pool below one of the falls, good for floating and for a calm swim away from the current.
  3. The Cave Swim: guides lead you through a water-filled cave passage behind the falls. Expect to swim in the dark for a short stretch, so a confident swimmer is needed.
  4. Cliff Jumps: guides point out ledges of varying heights and show you where the water is deep enough. Pick the low one first.
  5. The Natural Jacuzzi: a churning pocket in the rock where the current massages your back, and a favorite spot for photos.
  6. Guided River Walk: local guides explain the route, point out slippery sections and take photos for

  7. Roadside Jerk Stands: just outside the entrance, vendors grill chicken and pork over pimento wood, and it is the natural end to a wet morning.
Reach Falls and the jerk stands pair well in one day, since a morning swim leaves you hungry by lunchtime.

Port Antonio is the best base for Reach Falls, sitting roughly 35 to 45 minutes away by road, with the widest choice of budget beds in Portland parish. The town has guest houses and small hostel-style stays around Titchfield Hill and the waterfront, where you can walk to restaurants, a produce market and the shared taxi stand. It is the social option, since other backpackers gather here for the Blue Lagoon, Frenchman’s Cove and Winnifred Beach, and you can split taxi fares for the falls. For something quieter, look at Manchioneal, the fishing village closest to the falls, only a few minutes away. Stays here are small, family-run rooms and simple cottages, with a few beach bars and cookshops. It suits you if you want an early start at the gates and a slower evening with local fishermen, but options are limited and nightlife is minimal.

Drapers and San San, on the way from Port Antonio, sit between the two in character. Private rooms and villas are more common than dorms, so rates run higher, yet they work for couples or small groups sharing a cost.

🛡️ SafetyStaying Safe: What Travelers Should Know

The hike to Reach Falls is a delightful blend of adventure and accessibility. The trail is well-marked, but don’t let that lull you into complacency. The terrain can be uneven, with some steep sections that require careful footing. Watch your step on the rocky paths, especially after rain; mud can make things slippery.

Weather can shift quickly in Jamaica. Mornings are usually warm, but clouds can roll in, bringing sudden showers. A light rain jacket is a smart addition to your pack.

Wildlife is part of the experience. You might spot colorful birds or even a curious lizard. Keep your distance and don’t feed them; it’s best for both you and them.

FAQTraveler FAQ

Reach Falls is a tiered waterfall on the Driver’s River in Portland parish on Jamaica’s northeast coast, known for turquoise pools, limestone ledges and a cave you can swim into. It sits inland from the fishing village of Manchioneal. Entry costs about US$10 to 15, and local guides lead you through the cascades.
Reach Falls needs about 2 to 3 hours on site for swimming, the cave and the ledges, or half a day if you picnic. Add 35 to 45 minutes each way from Port Antonio, so most travelers treat it as a half-day or full-day outing. Combining it with Winnifred Beach or Boston Bay makes a full day.
To reach Reach Falls, most travelers head to Port Antonio, then take a route taxi toward Manchioneal (about 40 minutes) and walk or ride the last stretch up to the gate. A private taxi from Port Antonio usually costs US$30 to 50 round trip, while Kingston is roughly 2.5 to 3 hours away by car. Rental cars work, but the coastal road is narrow and winding.
⚠️ Things can change over time, so always validate details locally before you go.

We 💚 feedbackWhat to keep in mind

Reach Falls catches people out when they arrive in sandals or rush the climb and skip a guide. Wear water shoes with grip, hire a guide at the gate, and let them lead you through the cave and the jumps. I would also leave valuables in the car and bring a dry bag.
