Most people come for the legend of Annie Palmer, the “White Witch of Rose Hall,” and the night tour built around her ghost. The less-hyped part matters just as much: this is one of the best-restored Georgian plantation houses in the Caribbean, and the tour is honest about the enslaved people who built and worked it. Rose Hall Great House sits on the coast road east of Montego Bay in the north of Jamaica. The sound I connect with it is the creak of the old mahogany staircase underfoot while the guide drops her voice. Take the daytime tour; the house, the furnishings and the history are the draw. The night tour costs more and leans on theatrics, so skip it unless you want a spooky evening. Unlike nearby Greenwood Great House, which is a quieter collection of antiques, Rose Hall is a polished, guided production with more drama and more crowds.
