Backpacking in Petropavl
👌 Worth visitingcity ranked #14
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated May 17, 2026

Most online blurbs skip Petropavl entirely, but for backpackers it’s one of the cheapest, easiest places in northern Kazakhstan to feel everyday post-Soviet life up close. Sitting right on the Russian border in North Kazakhstan Region, it’s a compact, walkable city of low-rise blocks, leafy streets, and a slow, provincial rhythm. You get a solid regional museum, a few pre-revolution facades, parks along the Ishim, and low-key bars rather than big nightlife. It’s safe, very affordable, and simple to navigate, but meeting other travelers is harder than in Astana or Almaty, so you trade buzz for calm and curiosity.

  5. Central (Green) Bazaar — an honest, noisy market where you can taste regional cheeses, smoked fish from the Ishim, seasonal produce and pick up inexpensive souvenirs; real local energy, not a tourist staged market.
  6. Historic wooden merchant houses (Old town) — a cluster of 19th-century timber buildings and decorated façades that reveal Petropavl’s frontier-town past; excellent for wandering and photography.
  7. Victory Park and WWII memorial — the city’s main memorial green space with monuments and an eternal flame; it’s where local commemorations happen and where you’ll learn about the sacrifices of the region.
  8. Petropavl Railway Station — more than a transport hub: an active piece of history. The station area shows how rail shaped the city and is a good spot for watching daily comings and goings.
  9. Central Mosque — an accessible place to observe the Muslim community’s traditions in a multi-confessional city; the building and surrounding streets offer a calm, human slice of Petropavl life.
  10. Regional Art Gallery / Small contemporary galleries — local and regional artists, Soviet-era works and rotating shows; compact galleries are useful to understand local aesthetics and themes without the fuss of a big museum.
A few easy day trips from Petropavl include the Russian city of Omsk across the border (bigger museums and a historic centre), short drives out to steppe lakes and fishing spots in the surrounding North Kazakhstan countryside, and visits to nearby villages along the Ishim River for rural life and birdwatching.

All told, a realistic daily budget for backpacking in Petropavl ranges from about €15 on the leanest days to €30 if you opt for a bit more comfort or activity. This balance lets you decide where to save and where to splurge, turning your trip into a strategic win rather than a financial gamble.
