Most people either confuse Deçan with the monastery only, or assume it’s a tense, off-limits border town. It isn’t. It’s a small, workaday place in western Kosovo, tucked between Peja and Gjakova, with the Accursed Mountains rising behind the houses and fields. As a destination, it’s not about cafés and nightlife; it’s a quiet base where you smell wood smoke in the evenings and hear tractors more than bar music.

For backpackers, Deçan works best as a springboard: to the forested valley leading to Visoki Dečani Monastery, to nearby mountain villages, or as a calm overnight stop between Peja and Prizren. Buses are frequent and cheap, the town itself is walkable, and you’ll rely on taxis or hitchhiking for deeper trailheads. It’s cheaper and more low-key than Peja, less pretty than Prizren, but it feels safe, local, and pleasantly unscripted.
