Backpacking in Al Sulaibikhat Bay
👌 Worth visitingnational park ranked #6
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated May 28, 2026

Most people only realize after they leave that Al Sulaibikhat Bay is one of the few places near Kuwait City where you can get real coastal nature without burning half a day on driving. It sits along the northwestern shoreline of Kuwait Bay, just northwest of central Kuwait City, hemmed in by the urban sprawl and the coastal highway. As a “national park” it’s more of a protected coastal strip than a classic backpacker playground: flat trails and service roads for short walks, big skies, mudflats, mangroves, and birdlife if you hit the right season, but no dramatic peaks or deep backcountry. Access is easy, fees are low or nonexistent, and crowds are mostly local families, dog walkers, and anglers. Wild camping and true budget stays are basically off-site, and the vibe is subdued compared with more remote Kuwaiti reserves like Jahra Pools or the desert parks, which offer better wildlife and solitude but demand more logistics and transport.

💡 HighlightsTop highlights of Al Sulaibikhat Bay

  • Mangrove belts (grey mangroves) — Dense stands of Avicennia-style mangroves fringe parts of the bay, creating an unusual green fringe in Kuwait’s coast; they’re nurseries for fish, quiet bird hideouts, and great for low-impact kayaking through tangled roots.
  • Tidal flats and mudbanks — At low tide the bay exposes broad mudflats patterned with channels and pools; they brim with worms, crabs and other invertebrates and are a magnet for feeding shorebirds — fascinating to watch up close (but wear proper shoes).
  • Birdwatching hotspots — Al Sulaibikhat is a reliable stop for migratory and resident shorebirds and waterbirds (herons, egrets, terns and many waders). Seasonal passage can turn the shoreline into a busy, noisy feeding ground — bring binoculars.

  • Seagrass meadows and intertidal life — Shallow bays hide thick seagrass beds that support juvenile fish, invertebrates and the whole food web; look for small fish, gastropods and the odd crab in clear, calm water or at low tide.
  • Long shoreline walks and easy hiking — The flat, open coast around the bay makes for low-effort, high-reward walks: you’ll get close views of tidal patterns, chance wildlife sightings, and good exercise without steep climbs.
  • Sunsets and wide coastal vistas — The bay’s shallow water and broad horizon make for dramatic sunsets and photo-friendly silhouettes of mangroves and shorebirds — simple, quiet, and reliably beautiful on a clear evening.

  • Topic: Price Fluctuations – Accommodation and transport costs rise during peak season (winter). Booking early can save you money, but off-season rates drop significantly, though the heat might make it a poor trade-off.

Pro-tip: Aim for late autumn or early spring to dodge the heat and crowds, preserving your energy and budget for the moments that truly count.
