Backpacking in Green Island
👍 Recommendednational park ranked #5
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated June 6, 2026

Most online blurbs sell Green Island as a lush “nature escape,” but the surprise for backpackers is that it’s largely man‑made landscaping on a small offshore island, not a wild national park in the classic sense. It sits just off Kuwait City’s coastline along the Arabian Gulf Road, linked to the mainland by a causeway, so it’s extremely easy to reach by taxi or rideshare. You get sea views, paved walking paths, lawns, and a few trees, but no real hiking trails, minimal wildlife, and a curated, family-park feel. There’s usually a small entrance fee, crowds on weekends and holidays, and no camping or true budget accommodation on the island itself. Compared with Kuwait’s desert reserves and coastal protected areas, Green Island is tamer, more urban, and better for a low-effort stroll than an actual trek.

  • Topic: Seasonal Activities — The cooler months are prime for birdwatching and coastal walks, as migratory birds pass through. Summer activities are limited to brief early mornings or late evenings due to heat, which can disrupt your itinerary.

  • Topic: Price Fluctuations — Accommodation and transport costs rise slightly during the cooler season when demand peaks. However, the trade-off is worth it to avoid the risks and discomfort of summer heat, which can also lead to unexpected medical expenses.

Pro-tip: Aim for late November to early March to dodge the heat and crowds, maximizing your energy and budget for genuine exploration rather than survival.
