Maroantsetra Beach puts you steps from the boats that cross Antongil Bay to Masoala National Park, so you can sleep in town and be on the water by morning. It sits in the northeast of Madagascar, on the bay’s edge. I reached it by bush taxi along a rutted road, and a zebu cart blocked us while the driver laughed and waited. The sand is dark and rough, the surf is muddy near the river mouth, and the reward is a pirogue gliding past at dusk.

Town is small, fishing pirogues pull up in the evening, and cheap grilled fish and rice stalls are an easy walk away. Few other travelers pass through, which makes conversation with guides, boatmen and fellow hikers easy.

  • September to December: Driest and sunniest stretch on the Masoala coast, with highs of 27 to 30°C (81 to 86°F) and calmer seas. Daylight runs about 12 hours.
  • January to April: Hot, humid, 29 to 32°C (84 to 90°F), with cyclone risk and flooded roads.
  • May to August: Rain falls here all year. Expect showers, 22 to 26°C (72 to 79°F), and humpback whales in Antongil Bay from July to September.
Book Masoala boats and guides a few days ahead in September, when whale watchers arrive.

🛏️ Where to stay?How to pick the right area

Maroantsetra town is the place to sleep, since the beach here is a muddy-sand shoreline on Antongil Bay rather than a resort strip. The streets near the river and the main market hold the cheapest rooms (about Ar 30,000 to 60,000, or US$7 to 14) and the best chance of meeting other travelers over dinner. Simple bungalows a short walk or tuk-tuk ride toward the bay cost a bit more (roughly Ar 80,000 to 160,000) and are quieter, with sea breezes. Travelers heading to Masoala National Park often also stay on the Masoala peninsula itself, reached by boat, for rustic beachfront huts.

Maroantsetra Beach is calm and low-key, but it is not a swimming beach in the classic sense. The bay water is often murky from river runoff, and the Antainambalana River mouth brings currents and debris after heavy rain, so swim away from it. Sharks are known in Antongil Bay, so locals mostly wade rather than swim far. The sun is strong by 9 am. Keep valuables out of sight on the sand, as petty theft happens occasionally.

Fly to Maroantsetra airport (a short hop from Antananarivo, about 1.5 hours, with seasonal flights from Sainte Marie), then take a tuk-tuk or walk into town, usually under Ar 5,000. By road it is a tough 2 to 4 day journey from Antananarivo via Sambava or Mananara, and rains can cut it. The beach lies along the edge of town, so no further transport is needed.
Swimming is possible but mediocre, because the water is often silty and river currents exist near the mouth. Surfing is not practical. Snorkeling is much better around Masoala National Park and Nosy Mangabe, a boat ride of roughly 30 to 60 minutes, with day trips costing around Ar 150,000 to 300,000 (US$35 to 70) depending on group size.
Yes, the town beach is public with no entry fee. The paid costs come from nearby sights. Masoala National Park and Nosy Mangabe both charge park fees (around Ar 55,000 per day for foreigners), plus compulsory guides and boat hire, so budget for those if you head out.
