Majete Wildlife Reserve lets you see lions, elephants and black rhino on a single trip, with a real chance of all of them, and you can do it without a convoy of tour vans. It sits in the Lower Shire Valley in southern Malawi, southwest of Blantyre. The Shire River runs along its eastern edge, and the sound that carries furthest is the pop of hornbills and the grunt of hippos at dusk. The mopane and miombo woodland smells of dust and crushed leaves, and the hills are a rough, rocky tan in the dry months. The downsides are practical. Heat is heavy, the tsetse flies bite, and walking is only possible with guides. Book activities and camps ahead, since walk-in arrivals often find the best slots gone.
