Backpacking in Bukit Panorama
👌 Worth visitinghike ranked #4
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated May 30, 2026

Everyone shows up to Bukit Panorama expecting some wild, remote epic. It’s not. It’s a short, sweaty stair-master of a hill on the edge of Sungai Lembing, in Pahang, Peninsular Malaysia, and that’s exactly why it works. You grind up concrete and dirt steps for 30–45 minutes, heart hammering, headlamp beam bouncing if you go for sunrise. No jungle isolation, just a steady stream of locals and weekenders, plus the occasional kid overtaking you like it’s recess. But when you pop out on top, the payoff hits fast: a wide view over mist-filled valleys, tin-roofed town below, and a sky that actually earns the name “Panorama.” It’s easy to reach by bus or Grab from Kuantan, far more accessible than big-gun hikes like Gunung Nuang or Gunung Tahan, and perfect when you want effort without needing a full expedition.

💡 HighlightsMust-see experiences and standout moments

  1. Summit Panorama — The payoff: a wide, 360-ish view over the valley and neighboring peaks that catches the sunrise and sea-of-clouds at the right time. Unlike long, slow ascents on other trails, Bukit Panorama gives a relatively short, steep push to a dramatic outlook — big view for little effort.
  2. Ridge Walk & Sunset Ledges — My personal favorite. A narrow ridge with exposed ledges that frame the horizon; perfect for golden-hour photos and feeling like you’re walking the skyline. The combination of light, wind, and sudden drops makes it feel more alpine than tropical.
  3. Mossy Hill Forest — A patch of older, damp forest where ferns, mosses and dangling epiphytes turn trunks and rocks into green sculptures. It’s cooler, quieter and full of little details (tiny orchids, curious insects) — a

  3. Mossy Hill Forest — A patch of older, damp forest where ferns, mosses and dangling epiphytes turn trunks and rocks into green sculptures. It’s cooler, quieter and full of little details (tiny orchids, curious insects) — a nice contrast to the open viewpoints and a reason to slow your pace.
  4. Hidden Stream & Small Waterfall — A short detour brings you to a clear, shaded stream and a cascading pool that’s perfect for cooling your feet and swatting away sweat. Not a massive waterfall, but a welcome rest stop and a reminder that the trail mixes viewpoints with proper jungle terrain.
  5. Trailhead Kampung & Local Snacks — The hike often starts/ends in a small kampung where locals might sell cold drinks, kuih or fresh fruit. It’s a pleasant cultural touch: quick chats, cheap refuels, and a chance to support the people who live on the mountain’s edges — something many trailheads don’t offer.

🌤️ When to go?Weather, crowds, and seasonal trade-offs

  • Weather: Bukit Panorama’s best hiking window is during Malaysia’s dry season, roughly from March to early October. Rainfall drops significantly, cutting down on slippery trails and soggy gear. Avoid the monsoon months of November to February when heavy downpours can turn paths into mudslides and visibility tanks.

  • Temperature: Daytime temps hover between 27°C to 32°C (80°F to 90°F), with humidity that can sap your energy fast. Early mornings and late afternoons offer cooler air, around 22°C to 25°C (72°F to 77°F), perfect for pushing your pace without overheating.

  • Daylight Hours: Expect about 12 hours of daylight year-round, but the sun rises around 7 AM and sets near 7 PM. Starting your hike early maximizes cooler temps and daylight, giving you a buffer for slower sections or breaks.

  • Crowds: Weekends and public holidays pack the trail with locals and tourists alike. For a quieter trek, aim for weekdays or early mornings when the trail feels like your own rugged playground.

  • Seasonal Activities: The dry season aligns with local festivals and outdoor events, which can add cultural spice to your trip but also bump up accommodation prices and trail traffic.

  • Price Fluctuations: Peak hiking season (March to October) sees a slight uptick in lodging costs near Bukit Panorama. Booking ahead during this window secures better rates and avoids last-minute stress.

Pro-tip: Hit the trail just as dawn breaks during the dry season—cool air, empty paths, and that first light hitting the summit make every step worth the sweat.

Bukit Panorama is a sweat-drenched climb that rewards you with a breathtaking view of the lush landscape below. The thrill of reaching the top, feeling the breeze on your face, is pure magic. But be ready for the crowds; this isn’t a secluded trek. You’ll share the trail with fellow adventurers, which can take away from the solitude. Still, the payoff is worth every step.
