Golden Bay’s big plot twist: for all the glossy “resort beach” photos online, it’s one of the few sandy spots in Malta where you can still rock up by bus with a backpack, stay semi-broke, and not feel like you’ve crashed a package holiday brochure shoot. It sits on the northwest coast of Malta, just below Għajn Tuffieħa, with a big car park and a hulking hotel watching over it like a concrete lifeguard.

For backpackers, it’s a trade-off. The sand is clean, the water usually calm and great for swimming, but the crowds spike hard on weekends and in peak season, and the vibe leans family-plus-day-tripper more than scruffy traveler commune. Snorkeling is decent around the rocky edges, surfing is basically wishful thinking, and access is easy thanks to direct buses.
