The funny thing about Mellieħa Bay beach is that for all the glossy photos calling it “Malta’s perfect sandy paradise,” it’s also where you’re most likely to hear more inflatable unicorns squeaking than waves breaking. It sits on the north coast of Malta, just below Mellieħa town, on the main route toward Ċirkewwa and the Gozo ferries. For backpackers, it’s a trade-off beach: long, shallow, genuinely good for swimming, with soft sand and usually clear water, but also busy, built-up, and lined with sunbed grids. It’s cleaner and more spacious than tiny Golden Bay or Għajn Tuffieħa on a packed weekend, but far less dramatic. Snorkelling is meh, surf basically nonexistent, yet it’s absurdly easy to reach by bus and you can actually find budget takeaway, kiosks, and cheaper guesthouses nearby. Soul? Moderate. Convenience? Off the charts.
