The trail starts inside Black River Gorges National Park, where entry is free but you must register your name at the visitor center, and the Macchabée loop is mostly done on a sign-posted path that gets wet and muddy even in dry weather. The loop lies in the southwest of Mauritius, above the Black River Gorges, and links the Macchabée viewpoint with the Pétrin area and the gorge rim. Expect native forest, endemic birds and a sweeping view over the gorge toward the coast. Length is moderate, around half a day, but roots and mud make it harder than the distance suggests. Public transport is thin: buses stop in Curepipe and Chamarel direction, then you need a taxi or a long walk for the last stretch. Go early, when mist lifts and birds are loud.   • Hot Wet Season (November to April): Expect 22 to 30°C (72 to 86°F), thick humidity and afternoon downpours that turn clay sections slick. Cyclone risk peaks from January to March, and trails can close.
  • Daylight: Days run about 10.5 hours in June and July and 13.5 hours in December and January, so start early in winter.
  • Crowds and Prices: The forest is quiet year-round. Flights and beach hotels climb in December and during July and August school breaks, while the trail itself costs nothing extra.
Start by 7 am so you finish before afternoon cloud rolls in on the plateau.
