- Centro Mexicano de la Tortuga & night hatchling releases — A small but serious conservation center right at the beach where you can learn about hatchling rescue, egg incubation and turtle rehab. If you visit in nesting season (summer-early autumn) you might witness a nighttime release of baby turtles: low-light, quiet, ridiculously moving and something you won’t get at a commercial resort beach. (Personal favorite.)
- Punta Cometa headland for sunrise/sunset and stargazing — A short walk from the sand takes you to dramatic cliffs with 360° ocean views; sunsets here feel cinematic because the headland juts far into the Pacific. Come early or stay after dark for brilliant stars free from city glow — or scan for migrating whales in season.

- Mermejita cove and rugged black-sand pockets — A few minutes away but part of the Mazunte vibe: secluded, raw coastline that’s great for quiet sunbathing, wild swimming (only if you’re comfortable with surf) and photographing dramatic waves against dark sand. It’s the anti-resort spot — empty, windy, and very Instagram-without-the-tourists.
- Small panga trips for dolphins, turtles and seasonal whales — Local fishermen run low-key boat trips that put you close to dolphins and surface turtles, and in winter you can catch whale spouts offshore. These are simple, low-impact outings — no packed catamarans — and you’re often the only small group on the water.
- Yoga, eco-workshops and artisan stalls — Mazunte has a mellow, eco-minded community so the beach scene blends yoga classes, sustainable craft stalls and small workshops on natural cosmetics or local weaving. It’s not a shopping mall; it’s artisanal, compact and tied to the town’s conservation ethos — nice for a slow afternoon or an evening stroll.
