Everyone talks about Cantemir as “that border town by Romania,” but the border itself matters less than the slow, river-valley rhythm you feel once you step off the bus. Down in southern Moldova, on the Prut River opposite Romania, Cantemir is quiet, low-rise, and practical rather than pretty. For backpackers it works best as a calm overnight stop or a base to poke around rural villages and vineyards, not as a destination city. Buses from Cahul and Chișinău make it easy enough to reach, and the town is compact enough to walk, though you’ll rely on minibuses or hitchhiking for deeper countryside. There’s little in the way of hostels or nightlife; you get corner shops, a couple of simple restaurants, and long, blue-hour evenings where you hear dogs and distant tractors more than music.
