Backpacking in Orkhon Valley
👍 Recommendednational park ranked #6
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated May 23, 2026

Your boots crunch through frost-stiff grass while a herder’s dog circles you, suspicious but bored, and the only real sound is the Orkhon River pushing through black lava rock below. This is Orkhon Valley National Park in central Mongolia, west of Kharkhorin, on the backbone of the old Silk Road. For backpackers, it’s big-sky hiking, basalt canyons, and waterfalls rather than dramatic peaks; think long, rolling days, not summit trophies. Wildlife is mostly birds, marmots, and the occasional distant herder’s horse line, so don’t expect a safari. Getting in is straightforward but slow: rough tracks, shared vans, and drivers who quote “tourist prices.” Fees are modest, camping is easy if you’re self-sufficient, and ger camps are basic but not dirt-cheap. Compared with Khorgo-Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur or Gorkhi-Terelj, Orkhon feels quieter, more spread out, and less curated—great if you like space, frustrating if you crave facilities.

  • Ulaan Tsutgalan Waterfall — A wide, dramatic drop where the Orkhon River roars through a grassy gorge; great for a short hike and picnic, especially in late spring when runoff is high. (Personal favorite — nothing beats the sound of that fall with horses grazing nearby.)
  • Orkhon River meanders and steppe landscape — Endless rolling grasslands and slow river bends perfect for easy multi-day hikes or horse treks; the light at sunrise/sunset turns the valley into a living painting.
  • Tuvkhun Monastery — A cliffside Buddhist hermitage with sweeping views over the valley; the trail up is steep but short, and the ruins and prayer flags give a peaceful, off-the-beaten-path vibe.

  • Khoshoo Tsaidam and the Orkhon Inscriptions — Important early-medieval monuments (the Orkhon inscriptions) set beside wide-open steppe; a compact history stop that feels archaeological and wild at once.
  • Marmots, raptors and nomadic life — Wildlife isn’t dense but rewarding: marmots popping from burrows, golden eagles drifting overhead, and herders with flocks and horses — brilliant for low-effort wildlife watching and photography.
  • Short ridge and valley hikes — Scattered well-marked day trails and informal paths along ridgelines and into side gorges; they’re not technical, but they give variety and quiet campsites away from the few tourist hubs.

  • Seasonal Activities: Summer is prime for horseback riding, river fishing, and cultural festivals. Winter’s harshness shuts down most activities, except for hardy adventurers prepared for snow and ice.

  • Price Fluctuations: Accommodation and local transport costs rise during summer festivals and peak months. Booking ahead can save money; off-season rates drop but come with limited services.

Pro-tip: Aim for June or August to dodge the cold and crowds while catching the valley’s cultural pulse—this balance preserves your energy and budget for genuine experiences.

  • Length: 8 km
  • Estimated Duration: 3-4 hours
  • Difficulty Level: Moderate
  • Key Features: Stunning waterfall, lush greenery, and panoramic views of the valley
  • Terrain: A mix of rocky paths and well-trodden trails

Another option is the Khangai Mountain Trail. Here’s what you need to know:

Getting to Orkhon Valley is relatively straightforward. You can catch a bus or a shared taxi from Ulaanbaatar to Kharkhorin, then find local transport to the park. It’s not overly crowded, especially if you avoid peak season, but you might run into a few fellow travelers. There’s usually a small entrance fee, so keep some tugriks handy for that. Overall, it’s a fantastic spot for anyone looking to immerse themselves in nature without breaking the bank.
⚠️ Hiking info can sometimes be outdated or inaccurate. Before you hit the trail, check the latest conditions with locals. If you do spot anything that's off, I'd love to hear from you, so I can update it for fellow travelers.

🛡️ SafetyScams, Hazards, and Annoyances

Orkhon Valley National Park offers a generally accessible experience, but a few practical considerations can enhance your adventure. Weather can shift quickly, so layering is key. Mornings may be crisp, while afternoons can warm up significantly.

The terrain varies; some trails are well-marked, but others can be steep or rocky. Good footwear is essential. Pay attention to your footing, especially near river crossings, which can be slippery after rain.

Wildlife encounters are rare but possible. If you spot a horse or a herd of yaks, keep your distance. They’re part of the landscape, not a photo op.

First-timers often underestimate the need for navigation skills. A map and compass—or a reliable GPS—are invaluable. With these tips in mind, you’ll preserve your energy and budget for the moments that truly matter.
