Backpacking in Balkan Trail
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated September 4, 2026

Most people online sell the Balkan Trail as some polished, waymarked “new classic,” but on the Montenegrin section you’re still route-finding like it’s 2005 and that’s exactly what makes it good. In Montenegro it cuts through the northeast, threading the highlands between Plav, Gusinje and the Prokletije range near the Albanian border. The scenery hits hard: jagged limestone, big empty pastures, villages where your arrival is still mildly interesting news. It’s long and committing over several days, with real elevation and a difficulty that spikes fast in bad weather, so it’s not a casual warm‑up. Public transport gets you close via buses to Plav or Gusinje, but connections can be slow and awkward. Compared with Durmitor’s tidy day hikes or the more packaged Peaks of the Balkans, this feels rougher, cheaper, less curated—and, if you like earning your views, more satisfying.

  1. Bobotov Kuk (Durmitor) — Montenegro’s highest peak and the trail’s postcard moment: steep limestone ridges, glacial cirques and the mirror-like Black Lake below. It feels alpine — scrambling, exposed skyline, and massive views that make the climb worth every knee-aching step.
  2. Tara River Canyon & Đurđevića Tara Bridge — Europe’s deepest canyon carved into turquoise water. The bridge gives a classic vantage (and a bit of adrenaline), while downstream you’ll spot rafters, sheer cliffs and old-growth pines clinging to impossible slopes — a dramatic contrast to the mountain sections.
  3. Accursed Mountains (Prokletije) — raw, remote and jagged: think spiky summits, narrow ridgelines and high-altitude lakes tucked in rocky bowls. Fewer hikers here, more solitude and real backcountry terrain — excellent

  4. Biogradska Gora & Biogradsko Lake — one of Europe’s last true primeval forests with a calm, bowl-shaped lake at its heart. It’s an easy-to-love change of pace: mossy trails, centuries-old beech trees, and plenty of birdlife — perfect for mellow days or a soft campsite night.
  5. Mount Lovćen & Njegoš Mausoleum (view over the Bay of Kotor) — a cultural high point with a panoramic payoff: hike up, dodge a few stone steps, and you’re at the 19th-century mausoleum with sweeping views of fjord-like Kotor, terraced villages and the Adriatic. It’s where history and landscape collide in the best possible way.

  • Seasonal Activities: Spring bursts with wildflowers and birdlife, while autumn paints the landscape in fiery hues—both add a sensory punch to your trek. Summer’s heat limits wildlife activity but rewards with warm evenings for campfires.

  • Price Fluctuations: Accommodation and transport costs spike in July and August. Hiking in shoulder seasons means better deals and less competition for lodgings along the trail.

Pro-tip: Aim for late May or early October to dodge the heat and crowds, soak in vivid landscapes, and stretch your hiking day under generous light—this window nails the balance between challenge and reward.

🛡️ SafetyScams, Hazards, and Annoyances

The Balkan Trail in Montenegro is a thrilling adventure, but it demands respect. Weather can shift rapidly; sunny mornings can morph into sudden storms. Dress in layers and keep a rain jacket handy. The terrain varies from well-trodden paths to steep, rocky sections that require focus. Navigation is straightforward, but a good map or GPS is your best friend—don’t rely solely on trail markers.

Wildlife is part of the experience. You might spot deer or even a shy fox. Keep your distance and don’t feed them; this keeps both you and the animals safe.

First-timers often underestimate the altitude. Hydrate well and pace yourself, especially on the climbs. The reward? Breathtaking views that make every step worthwhile. After a long day, nothing beats that first cold beer at a local tavern, soaking in the hard-earned beauty around you.
