Backpacking in Skadar Lake
👍 Recommendednational park ranked #4
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated June 7, 2026

Most online blurbs sell Skadar Lake as a lazy boat-trip spot, but for a backpacker the real surprise is how big and wild it feels once you leave the marina towns behind. It sits in southern Montenegro, straddling the border with Albania, a short hop from Podgorica and the Adriatic coast. The national park gives you reed mazes, island monasteries, and birdlife that’s actually worth getting up early for, plus a few short but steep hikes above Virpazar and Rijeka Crnojevića with serious lake panoramas. Access is easy by road or train to Virpazar, but public transport around the lake is thin and boat tours add up fast, so costs creep if you don’t plan. Compared with Durmitor or Prokletije, trails are fewer, crowds more day‑tripper, and the vibe softer: homestays, vineyard courtyards, low-key lakeside camping, more wine and pelicans than epic ridgelines.

💡 HighlightsMust-see experiences and standout moments

  • Skadar Lake itself — the raw reason you’re here: a huge, shallow freshwater lake that feels part-marsh, part-open water. Water levels change with the seasons, which makes the scenery constantly shift; endless reflections, reed islands, and wide horizons make it a photographer’s dream without the crowds.
  • Virpazar — the small lakeside gateway village where most boat trips launch. It’s low-key, handy for booking guided bird and boat tours, trying local wine, and watching fishermen bring in the day’s catch from a café terrace.
  • Rijeka Crnojevića — a postcard-perfect riverside hamlet with a tiny stone bridge and a twisting river canyon. Great place to rent a kayak or take a short boat ride; the river feels intimate compared with the open lake and has lovely walking paths and bakeries.

  • Grmožur Fortress — an eerie little island fortress you can visit by boat. It’s got history (once a prison), dramatic stone walls rising from the water and a very cinematic look at sunrise or late afternoon light.
  • Beška Island and the monastic islets — scattered small islands with old Orthodox monasteries and ancient olive trees. They’re peaceful, photogenic, and give you a glimpse of the human history threaded through this watery landscape.
  • Mount Rumija viewpoints — a short, rewarding climb for a proper panorama where lake and Adriatic seem to meet. The trail isn’t technical but the views over the patchwork of water, islands and distant sea are the kind that make you want to sit and stare for a while.
  • Birdlife and reedbeds — Skadar is a bird magnet: think Dalmatian pelicans, cormorants, herons and many migratory species hiding in the reeds. Take an early-morning boat or use a blind/hide to see them close; the reed channels are also where you’ll notice the lake’s real wild character.

  • Seasonal Activities: Birdwatching peaks in spring and autumn during migration. Summer is best for swimming and boating, but be ready for heat and crowds. Winter limits water activities but offers peaceful, off-season solitude.

  • Price Fluctuations: Accommodation and local services spike in summer. Booking outside peak months can save you 20-40%, freeing up budget for guided tours or local cuisine.

Pro-tip: Aim for late May or early October—weather is kind, crowds thin, and prices reasonable. You’ll have energy left to savor the lake’s quiet moments without sweating the small stuff.

If you’re looking for something a bit more rustic, check out the eco-lodges scattered around the park. They often provide a unique experience, allowing you to immerse yourself in nature while enjoying basic comforts. Just be sure to book in advance, especially during peak season, as these spots can fill up quickly.

Avoid the tourist traps that promise luxury but deliver mediocre experiences. Focus on places that enhance your adventure, not complicate it. Your energy and budget are best spent on exploring the stunning landscapes and local culture.
