The festival is free to attend for most of its programming, including the big stages at Place Moulay Hassan and the beach. Essaouira Gnaoua World Music Festival takes place on the Atlantic coast of Morocco, a few hours west of Marrakech, inside the walled medina and on the Plage d’Essaouira. It runs for several days in late June and mixes gnawa, the trance-rooted music of descendants of sub-Saharan Africans, with jazz, funk, reggae and rock from visiting artists. The crowd is young, Moroccan-heavy and international, and the mood is relaxed and loud. I book a bed months ahead and walk the medina early, before the squares fill, to scout my route between stages. Skip the paid evening events unless you want a seat; the free stages and the parade are the best of it. Unlike Marrakech’s Festival of Popular Arts, which stages folklore for audiences, this one is built around one music tradition and the town itself.

The beachfront strip along the bay suits those who like sea air and morning runs, though the wind is strong and the walk back from late concerts is longer and darker. Stay off the new town edges past the main road, since they are far from the music and taxis are scarce at night. Booking early matters more than choosing the perfect street.
