Backpacking in Chhath Puja
👀 For curious travelersfestival ranked #15
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 15, 2026

Most people assume Chhath Puja is just another loud, colorful Hindu festival; it isn’t. In Nepal, you’ll feel it most intensely in the Terai belt and cities like Janakpur, Birgunj, Biratnagar, and along the Bagmati and other rivers near Kathmandu. It’s a sunrise-sunset ritual marathon, with devotional folk songs instead of party beats, families in their best clothes, and almost no tourist infrastructure. The vibe is solemn, electric, and very local. Backpackers who thrive on raw, crowd-heavy, zero-frills authenticity will love it; comfort-chasers should probably sit this one out.

💡 HighlightsEssential experiences to have while celebrating the Chhath Puja

  1. Pre-dawn Sunrise Arghya: Standing at the water’s edge as the first rays hit the horizon is spine-tingling — devotees waist-deep, lamps in hand, silence broken only by soft prayers. It’s visceral, intimate, and the moment when all the austerity of the fast turns into a visible offering to the Sun. (Personal favorite — nothing else quite matches that low-light hush and the way the river seems to glow.)
  2. Evening Sandhya Arghya and floating diyas: As the sun sets, ghats fill with people setting down rows of clay lamps that drift on the water. The sight of hundreds of tiny lights and the echo of communal chanting creates a cinematic, meditative atmosphere that’s equally beautiful and deeply rooted in tradition.

  3. Chhath Geet and folk singing: Groups sing traditional Chhath songs—call-and-response melodies, local dialects, and rhythmic clapping—throughout the evening and early morning. These songs carry stories, instructions for the ritual, and a raw communal energy that turns a religious observance into a living cultural performance.
  4. Thekua and ritual foods: Thekua (a fried, jaggery-and-flour sweet) and seasonal fruits are central offerings and gifts; they taste like the festival. Watching families shape, cook, and share these items gives a tangible sense of continuity—recipes and techniques passed down for generations.
  5. Community ghats and collective volunteering: Temporary ghats, improvised bamboo platforms, and neighbors teaming up to manage space and offerings make Chhath intensely communal. The logistics—people helping each other carry baskets, share water and space—turn a private vow into a public act of solidarity and hospitality.
