Backpacking in Fort Pannerden
👀 For curious travelersattraction ranked #22
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 15, 2026

Fort Pannerden is famous for its Dutch Water Line bunker complex, a round 1869 fort on the Rhine, yet the ferry-and-trail access matters just as much. It sits near Beek-Lobith, in Gelderland, close to the German border. Crowds stay thin, and tours are guided and seasonal. I paid about €4 for a coffee and a slab of appeltaart at the café, and it tasted of damp brick and cinnamon. Fewer thrills than Kinderdijk, but far more atmosphere.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #22 attraction in The Netherlands
What makes it a must-see attraction

Backpackers come for the Dutch Water Line story, since this fort was built to guard the Rhine where it enters the country and later served in the Second World War. The guided tour through dark casemates gives you more than a flat museum, and the walk or ride along the river dike makes the trip itself part of the day. It is a small, specific stop that suits a route between Arnhem, Nijmegen and the German border.

💡 HighlightsEssential experiences to have while visiting Fort Pannerden

  1. Guided fort tour: Guides lead you through the underground corridors, storerooms and gun chambers, explaining how soldiers lived here.
  2. Round gun tower: The circular design is unusual, built to hold heavy artillery covering the Rhine.
  3. Dark casemates: Narrow brick passages and low vaulted ceilings give the strongest sense of place.
  4. Rooftop and earthen ramparts: Grassy walls offer views over the river, floodplain and passing barges.
  5. Rhine dike approach: The walk to the entrance crosses open polder, with cattle, wind and wide skies.
  6. Wartime history displays: Exhibits cover the fort’s role in the Second World War and its later military use.
  7. Fort café: A simple stop for coffee and apple pie after the tour.
For a first visit, take the guided tour, because the underground casemates are the reason to come.

🛏️ Where to stay?Best areas to stay in The Netherlands

Nijmegen is the best base, about 20 km (12 miles) west of Fort Pannerden and well connected by bus and bike. The city is a university town, so its center and the Waal waterfront have the most social, budget-friendly hostel-style beds, cheap eateries, and student bars. Solo travelers will find it safe at night and easy to walk. Arnhem is the second choice, with a livelier backpacker scene near the station and the old center, plus quick trains to Nijmegen. Staying in Lobith or Pannerden village is quieter and closer, but options are few. Rent a bike wherever you sleep, as the flat dike roads make the ride easy.

👛 Costs (as of 15 October 2026)Typical daily expenses

Fort Pannerden costs roughly USD 50 to 100 a day for a backpacker, and the visit itself is a small share of that.
CategoryBudget RangeLocal Reality
Entry ticketUSD 8 to 14Adults pay a modest fee; children are cheaper. Guided tours and boat crossings can cost extra.
Food and drinkUSD 10 to 25Simple snacks and coffee at the fort or in nearby villages; groceries are cheaper.
TransportUSD 5 to 20Bus from Nijmegen or Arnhem to the area, then a bike or walk; bike rental runs about USD 12 to 18 a day.
AccommodationUSD 35 to 70Dorm beds in Nijmegen or Arnhem; prices rise in summer and on weekends.

FAQCommon questions from travelers

Allow two to three hours. The guided tour lasts roughly 60 to 90 minutes, and extra time covers the walk from the parking area or ferry landing plus a coffee at the café. If you cycle from Arnhem or Nijmegen, plan a half day.
Yes for most history-minded travelers, since entry is typically about €10 to 15 and includes a guided tour through the underground casemates. Skip it if you dislike small spaces or only want views. Check the current ticket price and tour times before you go.
Reach it by car or bike from Nijmegen or Arnhem, about 25 to 35 kilometers away. Buses run toward Beek and Millingen aan de Rijn, so expect a final stretch on foot or by bike along the dike. From Nijmegen, a bike ride takes roughly 1.5 hours.
⚠️ Things can change over time, so always validate details locally before you go.

We 💚 feedbackParting advice and final tips

Don’t treat Pannerden as a walk-in stop. Tours run on a schedule and the fort is closed outside the season, so check times first. Show up unannounced and you may only see the outer ramparts, which is a shame.
