The staff member at the rooftop door waved me toward the stairs and said, “Go up first, kids fill the lab floors by eleven.” She was right, and that one sentence explains how NEMO works. The green, ship-shaped building by Piano sits at Oosterdok in Amsterdam, a ten-minute walk from Centraal Station. The popular image is a kids’ museum, and the crowds confirm it: school groups and families dominate midday, especially in rain. Tickets run about €20 to 22, which is fair for hands-on exhibits, less so if you travel solo and skip the labs. Go early, climb to the free terrace, and treat it as a playful break from canal-and-Rembrandt sightseeing.

The best time to visit NEMO Science Museum is April to June or September, when Amsterdam is mild and the rooftop terrace is usable.
