The decision most travelers face is whether to give Oudewater a quick stop or an overnight, and the tipping point is the last bus out. Oudewater sits in the province of Utrecht, near the South Holland border, between Gouda and Utrecht. Buses from Gouda run roughly every 30 minutes, so day-trippers fill the center by noon. I bought a ticket for the Witches Weigh House at 9:30 and had it nearly to myself, and you can too. Hostels are absent and evenings are quiet, so stay only if you want empty canal streets.

The historic center is the best place to sleep in Oudewater, since everything is within a 10-minute walk and streets stay calm at night. Dedicated hostels are absent in town, so budget beds mean small guesthouses, B&Bs, and campsites, which book out quickly on summer weekends. Reserve early and expect roughly €60 to 100 for a private room. For lower prices and more dorm options, use Gouda, 25 to 35 minutes away by bus, which has a station and more choice. Noise is rarely an issue in either place, though church bells chime on the hour. Late arrivals should check the last bus times first.
