The reef at the base of the lighthouse turned out to be a calm, glassy pool at low tide, which I hadn’t expected from such a wild coast. Castlepoint Beach sits on the Wairarapa coast in New Zealand, east of Masterton. Crowds stay thin outside summer weekends, and the camping is cheap, though shops are scarce. The limestone reef shelters the lagoon, so swimming works at low tide only. Best for walkers and campers, poor for nightlife seekers.

Backpackers stop here because the place is a genuine detour into quiet. The Deliverance Cove lagoon behind the reef gives sheltered swimming that the open Pacific coast rarely offers, and the Castlepoint Station style of rural isolation means dark skies and little else competing for your attention. Camping near the sand keeps costs low, and a small store and café cover basics. It suits travelers who want a pause between Wellington and Hawke’s Bay, with space to decompress and cook beside the sea.

  3. Castle Rock climb: A steep track leads to the summit of the 162-meter limestone mass behind the beach, with long views along the coast.

  5. Stargazing from the beach: With almost no light pollution in the area, night skies here are sharp, and the lighthouse beam sweeps the water.

🌤️ When to go?Choosing the right time of year

  • Summer (December to February): Warmest and driest stretch, highs of 21 to 24°C (70 to 75°F), with daylight until about 9 pm. Campground and holiday-bach demand peaks around Christmas and January.
  • Autumn (March to May): Settled, calmer weather, 14 to 20°C (57 to 68°F), few people, and the lighthouse walk is easy going.
  • Winter (June to August): Cool, 8 to 14°C (46 to 57°F), daylight shrinks to about nine hours, southerly swells pound the reef. Rooms are cheapest.
  • Spring (September to November): Changeable and windy, 12 to 18°C (54 to 64°F), quiet and cheap.
Book summer weekends early, since the village has very limited beds.

🛏️ Where to stay?Where staying makes the most sense

Castlepoint village itself is the best base, because the beach, the lighthouse track and the pub-free but friendly little store are all within a short walk. Accommodation is limited to a seaside holiday park with tent and powered sites (roughly NZ$20 to 40 per person), a few cabins, and private baches rented through booking sites. Social hostel scenes do not exist here, so expect to meet other travelers at the campground kitchen. Masterton, about 65 km inland, has more hostels, motels and cafes, and works if the village is full. Pack groceries before arriving, as supplies are minimal.

🛡️ SafetyStaying Safe: What Travelers Should Know

Castlepoint is a safe, low-crime spot, though the sea needs respect. The main beach sits behind a long reef, so the lagoon on the sheltered side is calm and suits swimming at most tides. Outside the reef, rips and big Pacific swells are common, so stay inside the lagoon. Wind and strong sun are the usual troubles, so bring sunscreen and a windbreaker. Tide times matter on the reef walk. Lock valuables out of sight in cars, as in any remote carpark.

Drive from Masterton, about 65 km and one hour on sealed roads via Tinui or Riversdale Road. From Wellington it is roughly 2.5 to 3 hours (around 170 km) through the Wairarapa. No regular public transport reaches the village, so a rental car or a hitched ride from Masterton is the usual way.
Swimming is good in the sheltered lagoon behind Castle Rock reef, which is calm at most tides. Surfing is possible on the outer breaks for experienced surfers, but the swells are powerful and no lessons or rentals exist locally. Snorkeling is fair in the lagoon on clear, calm days (bring your own gear and a wetsuit, as water is about 13 to 19°C).
Yes, the beach, lighthouse walk and reef are free to visit, and day parking costs nothing. Only the holiday park charges, with campsites roughly NZ$20 to 40 per person per night. Toilets are available in the village at no charge.
