Backpacking in Hobbiton Movie Set
🌟 Highlightattraction ranked #4
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 15, 2026

The set sits on a working sheep and beef farm, the Alexander family’s land, and you cannot walk in on your own: entry is only by timed guided tour, so spots on the day often sell out. It lies in the Waikato region in the north of New Zealand, east of the town of Matamata. Expect tour groups of a few dozen, a fixed pace and a ticket price that stings on a tight budget. The structure explains why: the gardens are living, fragile things, and staggered departures keep the paths from clogging. I expected painted facades and plywood. Instead I crouched at one hobbit hole door and found the tiny hinges and carved knob worked fine, because the props are built to be handled, and the lawn in front was trimmed like a bowling green. The tour ends at the Green Dragon Inn, where a fire burns and a complimentary drink waits.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #4 attraction in New Zealand
The unique appeal for travelers

Hobbiton is the one place in New Zealand where a film set was built to last, and that changes what you get. Peter Jackson’s crew rebuilt the 44 hobbit holes in permanent materials for The Hobbit films, so you walk past real timber doors, trimmed hedges and vegetable gardens that look lived in rather than propped up. Even if you have never finished a Tolkien book, the craft is the draw. Gardeners tend the plots year-round, and the detail on a single round door (worn paint, a hung coat, a pile of firewood) shows how much thought went into a few seconds of screen time.

The second reason is the setting. The set sits on the Alexander family’s sheep farm, and the rolling pasture around Bag End and the Party Tree is the actual landscape that convinced Jackson during an aerial scout. You see why … read more 👉

The second reason is the setting. The set sits on the Alexander family’s sheep farm, and the rolling pasture around Bag End and the Party Tree is the actual landscape that convinced Jackson during an aerial scout. You see why he chose it the moment the tour bus crests the ridge.

Finally, it works as a milestone on the North Island route between Auckland and Rotorua. The tour ends with a cider or ginger beer at the Green Dragon Inn, a pleasant, unhurried finish that makes the cost easier to justify.

💡 HighlightsMust-see experiences and standout moments

  1. Bag End and the Party Tree: The hole at the top of the hill is the most photographed spot, with the huge oak above it. The tree is a fake, with artificial leaves, which the guides happily explain.
  2. Bagshot Row: A cluster of hobbit holes in the hillside, with different door colors and sizes that show how scale tricks were used for camera angles.
  3. Sandyman’s Mill and Bridge: The stone double-arched bridge and the mill by the lake form the most composed view on the set, especially when the water is calm.
  4. The Green Dragon Inn: A complimentary beer, cider or ginger beer in a low-ceilinged room with a fireplace. Linger here, as the tour group slowly thins out.
  5. The Party Field: The open meadow where Bilbo’s birthday was staged. Guides describe the shoot logistics in detail, from the extras to the fireworks.

  6. Hobbit garden details: Look at the vegetable beds, flowers and washing lines. Gardeners maintain them constantly, so the planting changes through the year.
  7. The Lakeside walk: A short path along the water gives a different angle back toward the mill and hillside, good for photos without crowds in the frame.
The Green Dragon pairs well with a late-afternoon tour slot, since a slow drink then fills the evening before the drive back.

🌤️ When to go?Seasonal considerations and timing

Hobbiton runs tours year-round, and the gardens look fullest from November to March, when the flowers are in bloom.
  • Summer (Dec to Feb): Highs of 22 to 26°C (72 to 79°F) and daylight until about 9 pm. Tours sell out, and midday coach groups make the lanes crowded.
  • Autumn (Mar to May): 15 to 22°C (59 to 72°F), softer light and thinner groups. The vegetable gardens are still productive.
  • Winter (Jun to Aug): 8 to 14°C (46 to 57°F), with dark by about 5:15 pm and regular rain. Tour slots are easy to find, and smoke curling from the hobbit-hole chimneys looks the part.
  • Spring (Sep to Nov): 12 to 20°C (54 to 68°F), with blossom, lambs in the paddocks and changeable showers.
  • Evening Banquet Tours: These run at dusk, so the start time shifts through the year, and the lantern-lit walk is best in the darker

Book the first morning slot, since the lanes are quietest before the buses arrive.

Matamata, about 10 minutes by car from the set, is the practical base for backpackers, and it has the only real budget choices close by.
The town is small and quiet, with a handful of cafes, a supermarket and a few pubs along Broadway. You can find shared dorms and cheap motel rooms here, along with holiday parks that offer cabins and powered sites. The park options suit anyone with a campervan, which is how many travelers visit. Matamata is safe to walk at night, though it is not a party town, and the social side comes mostly from shared kitchens and common rooms.

Rotorua, about an hour south, is the better choice if you want a livelier hostel scene, with plenty of dorms, restaurants and bars plus geothermal sights and Māori cultural experiences. Hamilton, roughly 50 minutes northwest, has more variety and more nightlife, and it suits those arriving by bus or train.
I would stay in Matamata for an early tour slot and move on to Rotorua afterward. Shuttles run from Matamata’s i-SITE, which saves you a rental car.

FAQTraveler FAQ

Plan on 3 to 4 hours in total. The guided walk takes about 2 hours, and the rest goes on the cafe, the Green Dragon Inn and the shuttle from the Shire’s Rest ticket building. Allow a full half day if you are coming from Rotorua or Hamilton.
For fans of the films, yes, at NZD 130 per adult. The tour covers 44 hobbit holes with detailed gardens and ends with a drink at the Green Dragon Inn. If you have not seen the movies, it is a lot of money for a pleasant farm walk, so skip it.
Drive to Matamata, then about 10 minutes to the Shire’s Rest, where all tours begin. Matamata is around 50 minutes from Hamilton and about 1 hour from Rotorua, and public buses reach the town. Tour shuttles from Matamata i-SITE or Rotorua take you the rest of the way, about NZD 30 to 70 return.
⚠️ Things can change over time, so always validate details locally before you go.

We 💚 feedbackSumming up the experience

Most people rush the walk and miss the sheep grazing beyond the fence lines, a reminder that this is a working farm. Slow down at the back of the group, look at the real plants, and let the guide’s film stories finish. I would book the earliest slot you can, when the light is soft and the paths are quiet.
