Luminate Festival is alcohol-free, which changes how the whole weekend runs: nobody is hunting for a bar, so the energy peaks early and the late-night fields stay oddly clear-headed. It happens in January at Canaan Downs on Takaka Hill, in the north of New Zealand’s South Island, up above Golden Bay. Expect a music and arts gathering held every second summer, with families, artists and travelers sharing tussock paddocks. I still hear the wind-chime clatter of hand-built installations against deep bass drifting over the grass at dusk. That mix keeps it small, creative and unhurried. The last detail I’d note is the road up Takaka Hill, a switchback climb with a view back down to the bay.

Luminate Festival runs for about four days in January, usually spanning a weekend in the middle of the month, and is held every second year at Canaan Downs on Takaka Hill in Golden Bay.
