In Nicaragua, we visited the only island-in-freshwater-with-two-volcanoes in the world (!!!) (Isla Omepete). It depends on how you want to market your island to tourists, but we fell for it. During our hike with a local guide, we encountered a whole family of howler monkeys. The first time you hear them roar, you think there’s an orangutan right behind you. With that guide, we also spent some time talking about the political situation in Nicaragua, which was super interesting (that’s what makes learning Spanish fun when you travel here).

The border crossing from Nicaragua to Honduras was the most pleasant I’ve ever seen. Instead of waiting grumpily for you to fill out all the forms in triplicate, here were three cheerful people sitting outside in the rain at a small table, filling everything out for you. It seemed a bit like hidden unemployment, but everyone had their own responsibility. One filled in my details, another checked that, and the last one stamped my passport. When we asked if we were done and they said “yes,” we walked into Honduras. But halfway, a police officer cheerfully called us to come by his office. In the end, we had to visit four different booths, paying a dollar at each one.
