Most people online sell Matka Canyon as a serene boat-trip spot, but the surprise for backpackers is that the main lakeside trail is rough, narrow, and at times exposed enough that you’ll actually break a sweat and watch your footing. Matka Canyon sits just southwest of Skopje, in North Macedonia’s crumpled hills, and the hike tracks the cliff above the emerald reservoir, ducking in and out of shade with rock underfoot and the water far below. It’s short to moderate in length, more of a half-day traverse than a full expedition, but the uneven surface and drop-offs make it trickier than the distance suggests.
