Your boots crunch on old snow in July, wet wool gloves steaming as you pull them off, the air smelling like cold stone and reindeer moss while meltwater roars somewhere below the fog. That’s Breheimen National Park, wedged between Jotunheimen and Jostedalsbreen in inland Western Norway. For backpackers, it’s a quieter, rougher cousin to those two: big glacial valleys, long ridge hikes, real chances of seeing reindeer, but fewer marked trails and huts. Access is decent by Norwegian standards, but buses are sparse and trailheads feel scattered, so you pay in time and planning instead of entrance fees (there aren’t any). Wild camping is easy and legal, but budget cabins book up. Compared with Jotunheimen’s crowds and Jostedalsbreen’s guided-glacier circus, Breheimen feels more work, more solitude, and more weather.
