- Wadi Ghul (the ”Grand Canyon of Arabia”) — The jaw-dropper view into a gorge so deep it makes you forget how small you are. The scale of the cliffs, the layered rock faces and the way light sweeps across them at sunrise or late afternoon are the signature image of Jebel Shams.
- The Balcony Walk (rim trail) — A relatively short but exposed rim trail that hugs the cliff, giving constant, dramatic vantage points into the canyon. It’s unique because you’re walking along a sheer drop with uninterrupted panoramas — great for photos and that little adrenaline kick.
- Jebel Shams Summit (highest point in Oman) — Standing on the summit feels properly alpine: wide, barren plateaus, crisp air and 360° views across the Hajar range. It’s the obvious “you made it” spot and lets you see how the entire mountain

- Terraced villages and falaj-fed fields — Scattered hamlets and stepped agriculture cling to the slopes, showing how people have worked this harsh landscape for centuries. Those terraces, stone houses and irrigation channels add a human scale and cultural texture you don’t get on purely wilderness hikes.
- Wildlife, geology and dark skies — Keep an eye out for raptors riding the thermals, mountain goats/Arabian tahr on the cliffs, and the exposed rock layers that tell a long geological story. Also: the remoteness + elevation makes for excellent stargazing if you camp overnight — Milky Way central on a clear night.
