Backpacking in Kachura Lake Trek
👀 For curious travelershike ranked #16
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated September 29, 2026

Most people don't realize you can base yourself in Skardu and knock out Kachura Lake as a half-day trip, saving you a night's lodging budget for the bigger treks ahead. The lakes sit in the Skardu Valley of Gilgit-Baltistan, a short drive from town. The walk itself is gentle, more of a scenic stroll than a hike, with turquoise water and poplar-lined shores as the payoff, easy compared to anything in the Deosai or Karakoram. I remember dipping my hand into Upper Kachura's water and yanking it back, shockingly cold even in July sun. Getting there by public transport from Skardu means haggling with jeep drivers, not always straightforward.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #16 hike in Pakistan
What makes it a must-see hike

Backpackers add Kachura Lake to their Skardu itinerary because it delivers a strong scenery-to-effort ratio: turquoise water and mountain backdrops for barely any physical exertion. It's cheap, often under a few hundred rupees for entry and a shared jeep ride, making it an easy add-on rather than a dedicated expedition day. The flexible distances suit everyone, you can walk the shoreline in twenty minutes or spend hours exploring both Upper and Lower Kachura. Its location near Skardu, the launch point for Karakoram treks and K2 base camp expeditions, means it slots naturally into a longer Gilgit-Baltistan route without demanding an extra travel day.

💡 HighlightsDon't-miss highlights and experiences

  1. Upper Kachura Lake's color shift: Depending on the sun's angle, the water swings from deep green to turquoise to near-black, a genuinely striking effect that photos rarely capture accurately.
  2. Shangrila Resort at Lower Kachura: Built around a crashed plane fuselage repurposed as a restaurant, it's touristy but worth a look for the oddity alone and the view across the lake from its lawn.
  3. Poplar and willow groves: The tree-lined paths between the two lakes give shade and a rustling soundtrack that contrasts with the stark rock faces of the wider Skardu Valley.
  4. Reflections of Karakoram foothills: On calm mornings, the surrounding peaks mirror perfectly on Upper Kachura's surface, my personal favorite moment of the whole outing.
  5. Local trout: Both lakes are stocked with trout, and small roadside stalls

🌤️ When to go?Best time to hike the Kachura Lake Trek

  • Summer (June to August): Warmest window, daytime temps around 25-30°C (77-86°F), clear skies and long daylight hours near 14-15 hours, but also peak domestic tourist season with crowded parking lots and inflated jeep fares.
  • Spring (April to May): Cooler at 15-20°C (59-68°F), fewer crowds, blossoms around Skardu town, though some mountain roads may still be affected by lingering snowmelt runoff.
  • Autumn (September to October): My favorite window, mild 15-22°C (59-72°F), golden poplar trees, thinning crowds, and stable weather.
  • Winter (November to March): Cold, often below 5°C (41°F), some lake edges can ice over, and tourist infrastructure in Skardu scales down significantly.
Go early morning in September if you want the lake mirror-still and the parking area empty.

Terrain and Scenery: Mostly flat dirt and gravel paths along the shoreline, with dry rocky hills framing the valley beyond the tree line.
Vegetation: Poplar, willow, and apricot trees cluster near the water, giving way to sparse desert scrub on the surrounding slopes.
Wildlife: Trout in both lakes, occasional birdlife including magpies and raptors overhead; no significant large mammal encounters expected.

🛡️ SafetyStaying Safe: What Travelers Should Know

This is a low-risk outing by regional standards, no altitude concerns and no technical terrain. The main practical gap first-timers hit is transport: agree on jeep fares before departing Skardu to avoid disputes later. Water can be dangerously cold for swimming even in summer, so ease in rather than diving. Sun exposure is real at this elevation, so bring a hat and sunscreen even for a short walk. Trails near the shoreline can get slick after rain, but nothing requiring special gear.

FAQFrequently asked questions about Kachura Lake Trek

A visit to Kachura Lake typically takes between 2 and 4 hours, covering both Upper and Lower Kachura Lake, including time to relax at the Shangrila Resort area. It works well as a half-day trip from Skardu, with the drive there and back adding roughly an hour total depending on jeep availability.
It's an easy outing suitable for all fitness levels, with flat to gently rolling paths and no significant elevation gain. There's no technical hiking involved, making it a good rest-day activity between more demanding treks in the Karakoram region.
No permit or guide is required to visit Kachura Lake, unlike many high-altitude treks in Gilgit-Baltistan. You'll pay a small entry fee at Shangrila Resort if you want access to its grounds, but independent travel to and around the lakes is straightforward without official paperwork.

We 💚 feedbackKey takeaways before you go

Kachura Lake earns its place as an easy, low-cost break in a Skardu itinerary, the color of Upper Kachura alone justifies the short trip. The drawback: it's touristy near Shangrila, and jeep drivers can overcharge if you're not paying attention. Negotiate first, wander second.

✈️ When did I visit Pakistan?
Even though the media portrays Pakistan often as a dangerous country, it has its great spots, and for a mountain lover like me the mountain regions in the north are just heaven. Visited Pakistan in October 2022.
