- Fortifications of Portobelo (UNESCO) — crumbling Spanish forts perched over the bay give the park a rare double act: real wilderness and real history. Walk the ramparts, imagine the cannonballs, then turn around for one of the best coastal vistas in the area.

- Mangrove estuaries — dense mangrove channels that act as nurseries for fish and crustaceans and attract wading birds. Paddle or boat through for calm, intimate wildlife-watching and surprising biodiversity.
- Rainforest trails and hilltop lookouts — short, punchy hikes up into humid forest that open onto sweeping views of the bay and islands. Lots of little side-trails for birding and monkey-spotting; this is my personal favorite for the mix of exercise, views and solitude.
- Birdlife and coastal seabirds — expect frigatebirds and terns over the water, herons and kingfishers in the shallows, plus a chorus of tropical songbirds inland. Easy pickings for casual birdwatchers and decent photo opportunities without trekking for miles.
