Black volcanic sand scorches your soles, steam leaks from a vent behind the tree line, and a dugout canoe slides past while you wade into water the temperature of a bath. That is the Kimbe Bay coast in West New Britain, in the north of Papua New Guinea, on an island east of the mainland. Skip it if you want white-sand lounging. Come for the reefs just offshore, the cheap guesthouses in Kimbe and the oil palm roads that make exploring easy by local PMV. Swimming is fine, crowds are almost nil, though litter shows near town. Unlike Rabaul’s ash-gray shores, this coast puts coral first.

Backpackers stop here for the diving and snorkeling in Kimbe Bay, where reefs and seamounts drop close to shore and local operators run trips that cost far less than comparable reef hubs elsewhere. Expect colorful fish at a few paddle strokes from the sand, so you do not need a boat for a first look.

The second pull is the geology. Black sand beaches around Mount Pago and the Talasea peninsula let you pair a swim with hot springs and a volcano view, which is a rare combination on one short stretch of road.

It also works as a breather between the rough highland legs and the long haul to Rabaul. Villagers are quick to chat, and you leave with real conversations rather than a checklist.

  • Dry Season (May to October): Southeast trades bring the calmest, clearest diving and snorkeling on the north coast near Kimbe Bay, with highs of 29 to 32°C (84 to 90°F) and lows near 23°C (73°F). Rain still falls here, just less.
  • Wet Season (November to April): Northwest monsoon squalls arrive, bringing heavy afternoon downpours, muddy roads, and choppier seas. Temperatures hold at similar levels, though humidity feels heavier.
  • Daylight and Crowds: Sun rises around 6 am and sets around 6 pm all year. Visitors are few in every month, mostly divers, and prices for dive trips and rooms barely shift.
Book flights into Hoskins early for July and August, when seats fill.

Most beaches here are calm, protected by the shelter of Kimbe Bay, so swimming is gentle with little surf and weak currents. Reefs begin close to shore, and the main hazards are sharp coral and the occasional stonefish, so wear reef shoes. Saltwater crocodiles live in some river mouths and estuaries, so swim only where villagers do and ask before entering the water. Sun is intense from mid-morning, and afternoon squalls can roll in during the wet months. Petty theft is a concern around Kimbe, so leave valuables at your lodge, avoid walking alone after dark, and ask your host to arrange transport and a local guide for remote beaches.

Fly to Hoskins Airport (HKN) from Port Moresby on Air Niugini or PNG Air, a flight of about 1.5 hours. From Hoskins, Kimbe is roughly 30 to 40 minutes by road, and lodges usually arrange pickups for around K50 to 100 (US$12 to 25). Local PMVs also run along the coast, but they are crowded and irregular.
Snorkeling and diving are the highlight, since Kimbe Bay has more than 400 coral species and walls and reefs a short boat ride from shore. Swimming is easy in the sheltered bay, with warm water around 28 to 30°C (82 to 86°F). Surf is minimal on the bay side, though a few spots on the open coast can pick up swell. Dive trips cost around US$100 to 150 per day.
Most beaches are free to access, but land is customarily owned by villages, so you should ask permission and often pay a small fee of about K10 to 50 (US$2 to 12). Lodges with private beach frontage may charge day visitors. Boat transfers to remote beaches, plus guides, are the main costs, typically K100 to 300 (US$25 to 75).
