Backpacking in Playa de la Costanera
👍 Recommendedbeach ranked #3
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated May 25, 2026

Playa de la Costanera looks like a beach on Instagram, but the surprising truth is you’re standing on the shore of a landlocked river city, not the ocean, and the “sand” experience feels more urban park than tropical escape. It sits along the Costanera waterfront in Encarnación, in southern Paraguay near the Argentine border. For backpackers, it’s a chill, low-stress stop: easy to reach on foot or by bus, cheap eats a block back from the water, and plenty of budget guesthouses and hostels scattered through town. The sand is reasonably clean by regional standards, though after busy weekends it can get a bit trashy, and crowds spike on hot evenings when half the city comes out to promenade. Swimming is calm but not crystal; think warm river, not Caribbean fantasy, with zero surf and no real dive or snorkel appeal. Compared with Paraguay’s other river “beaches” like San José or Carmen del Paraná, Costanera wins for atmosphere and people-watching, but if you’re chasing wild scenery, you’ll feel the concrete and traffic at your back.

💡 HighlightsKey sights and experiences for travelers

  • Sunset over the Paraguay River and the city skyline — The Costanera faces Asunción so sunsets light up both the river and the low-rise skyline; cranes and river barges silhouette nicely, making for unbeatable photos and a mellow crowd of locals who come just to watch. Best at dusk (day → evening).
  • Seasonal sandbars and shallow river wading — When water levels drop you get wide, walkable sandbanks that feel more like a river-plain than a beach: perfect for exploring, shallow wading, and setting up a quiet spot away from the busiest areas. Bring shoes for hotter sand and watch for currents—mainly a daytime thing.

  • Pickup beach sports and local football/volley culture — Locals organize intense five-a-side football and footvolley right on the sand; the pace and competitiveness are distinctly Paraguayan and joining a game is one of the fastest ways to meet residents. Lively afternoons into early evening.
  • Riverside food stalls and informal asado on the sand — You won’t get fancy seafood towers here, but you will find grilled fish, parrilla smells, chipa and tereré vibes: street-food comfort with a riverfront twist. Weekends are when the smells and crowds peak (day → early night).
  • Evening promenade, live street music and low-key nightlife — After dark the wide promenade fills with families, buskers and occasional open-air bands; there’s no club scene on the sand, but the social, communal nights—lit walkways, music, food carts—are a real local experience. Primarily an evening activity.

  • Topic: Seasonal Activities – Dry months coincide with local festivals and open-air markets nearby, adding cultural spice to your beach trip. Wet season? Mostly just mud and mosquitoes.

  • Topic: Price Fluctuations – Expect accommodation and food prices to dip outside the dry season, but be ready for a trade-off with weather and comfort. Peak dry season means slightly higher prices but a smoother experience.

Pro-tip: Aim for shoulder months like May or September—good weather, fewer crowds, and you might snag a deal or two without sacrificing the vibe.

Then there’s the area around the nearby parks. These green spaces are perfect for lounging, people-watching, or even striking up a conversation with fellow travelers. The hostels here often organize group activities, so you can bond over shared adventures or the absurdity of trying to communicate in a mix of Spanish and hand gestures.

Avoid the overly touristy spots that charge a premium for mediocre views. Instead, embrace the local scene. You’ll get a taste of authentic Paraguayan life while keeping your wallet happy. Plus, nothing beats the thrill of finding a cozy nook where the beach is just a few flip-flops away.

🛡️ SafetyStaying Safe: What Travelers Should Know

Playa de la Costanera is a laid-back spot where the beach vibe is as chill as a Sunday afternoon. Swimming conditions are generally safe, with gentle waves that won’t knock you over unless you’re trying to impress someone with a dramatic dive. Locals know where to swim—stick to those areas, especially when you see flags indicating safe zones.

As for marine life, you’re more likely to encounter a friendly ray than a shark, but keep an eye out for jellyfish during warmer months. They can be sneaky little devils, so a quick scan of the water is wise.

Weather can shift, especially in the afternoon when the sun cranks up the heat. Sunscreen is your best friend here; no one wants to leave with a lobster glow. Theft isn’t rampant, but keep your belongings close—no one wants to be the person who … read more 👉

We 💚 feedbackSumming up the experience

Playa de la Costanera is like a breath of fresh air in the heart of Asunción. The riverside vibe is perfect for unwinding with a cold tereré and people-watching. But let’s be real: the beach can get crowded, and finding a spot to lay your towel might feel like a game of musical chairs. Still, if you’re after a slice of local life, it’s worth the hustle. Just embrace the chaos!
